Dear Mr Wang,
Your request was received on 24 October 2023, and I am dealing with it under the terms of the
Freedom of Information Act 2000 (‘the Act’).
You asked:
I would like to request the following admissions information for the past academic years: 2020-
2021, 2021-22, 2022-23.
For each of the graduate courses,
1. MPhil in Data Intensive Science
2. MPhil in Scientific Computing
3. MPhil in Advanced Computer Science,
I request the following information:
a) applications from applicants previously attending mainland Chinese universities
b) offers to applicants previously attending mainland Chinese universities
c) applications from applicants previously attending Hong Kong universities
d) offers to applicants previously attending Hong Kong universities
e) undergraduate gpa or other equivalent grades achieved by offer holders previously attending
mainland Chinese universities
f) undergraduate gpa, classification, or other equivalent grades achieved by offer holders
previously attending Hong Kong universities
For a, b, c, d, I request separate data for different universities.

The requested information is attached, with the exception of previous degree classification/grades;
these are entered into free text fields by applicants and cannot be collated into any meaningful
statistical output. Some suppression and aggregation have been applied to prevent the risk of any

individual being identified. In presenting the information in this way, the University is engaging the
exemption at section 40(3A)(a) of the Act because the release of the raw data would breach the first
data protection principle (the fair, lawful and transparent processing of personal data) as set out in the
UK General Data Protection Regulation. This part of section 40 confers absolute exemption under the
Act.

number above. The University would normally expect to receive your request for an internal review
