Accountin summary information

We're waiting for Judy Norwood to read recent responses and update the status.

Dear Durham University,

This is an FOI request to obtain the following information:

Income and Expenditure information broken down by cost centre (i.e. at least at the level of each academic / support / administrative department and centre) at the level of account codes (i.e. the overall nature of the income / expense). I would request this information for at least the previous financial year 2018/19 and, if it is easily available, the previous two financial years. Summarising the information by account code should ensure that there is no concerns about individual data being exposed - where that is the case, I would request that you round the numbers rather than fail to provide the data.

Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours faithfully,

Judy Norwood

ACCESS I., University of Durham

Dear Judy Norwood

Thank you for your request for information from Durham University.
Colleagues have provided the information below in response to your
questions.

Income and Expenditure information broken down by cost centre (i.e. at
least at the level of each academic / support / administrative department
and centre) at the level of account codes (i.e. the overall nature of the
income / expense). I would request this information for at least the
previous financial year 2018/19 and, if it is easily available, the
previous two financial years. Summarising the information by account code
should ensure that there is no concerns about individual data being
exposed - where that is the case, I would request that you round the
numbers rather than fail to provide the data.

The University confirms that it holds the information you have requested.
However, the University declines your request under Section 43 (2) of the
FoIA. Section 43 (2) of the FoIA exempts information from release where
its disclosure under the Act would, or would be likely to, prejudice
substantially the commercial interests of any person or public authority.
As section 43 (2) is a qualified exemption, the University has performed a
public interest test and has concluded that the release of information
about the levels to which it funds departments and areas of the University
would prejudice the commercial interests of the University.

The University recognises that release of the requested information may
allow individuals to better understand and scrutinise the business of the
University and how decisions are

made, including the allocation of financial resources.

However, this information when combined with other publicly available
information would allow the computation of commercially sensitive data.
The University operates in global market with competition from a range of
public and private providers and the University’s position in this
specialist market could be undermined by competitor institutions to the
detriment of free and open competition.

If you are dissatisfied with the University’s response to your freedom of
information request, you can ask us to internally review our handling of
your request, including the application of any exemptions applied.  To do
this, please email [1][Durham University request email] or write to:

Please state the grounds on which you wish the decision to be reviewed and
enclose any other information that may be useful in considering the matter
further.  We aim to inform you of our decision within 20 working days from
the date your request for internal review is received.

If you are not satisfied with the results of the internal review you may
apply to the Information Commissioner's Office for an independent review.
