Access to self-study areas for students

The request was successful.

Dr Robert S. Coull

Dear East Dunbartonshire Council,

Self-directed learning is an important part of student education. To that end, it is important for secondary students to have access to quite areas for study during the school day when they do not have scheduled classes, for example in the school library.

Please could you provide me with the following information for all secondary schools within the ED council area.

1. Does the school have a library that students can use for self-study?

2. What are the hours of operation of the library?

3. What other areas are available within the school for self-study which are sound-controlled (ie: which are not in a public area) and how are they staffed/monitored?

4. What are the hours of operation of those areas?

5. What school policies cover the use of/access to such areas (including the library) for self study?

Yours faithfully,

Dr Robert S. Coull

East Dunbartonshire Council

Dear Dr Coull

Thank you for your request for information. In answer to your enquiry I can
provide the following response on behalf of East Dunbartonshire Council.

1. Does the school have a library that students can use for self-study?

All secondary schools have a dedicated library area.

2. What are the hours of operation of the library?

In almost all schools, the library is open for the full school day
including access at lunchtime and after school. Two schools only have
staffing for half of the week.

3. What other areas are available within the school for self-study which
are sound-controlled (ie: which are not in a public area) and how are they
staffed/monitored?

There are break-out areas in all schools which young people can use for
self study. The 6 new build schools have a more generous allocation of this
space than the remaining 2 schools.

4. What are the hours of operation of those areas?

As above these areas are accessible for the full school day. If required
after school bespoke arrangements will be made by the school to facilitate
this.

5. What school policies cover the use of/access to such areas (including
the library) for self study?

There are no specific school policies about use of and access to these
areas - this is implicit in approaches to conduct in the school and
attainment and achievement for all young people.

the Local Authority to clarify or explain, please do feel free to get in
