Dear FOI England (NHS ENGLAND),
With regards to question (1) I should be happy to have the most recent statistics available for a 12 month period and for Worcestershire or if not kept specifically by County the regional statistical profile for those issues specified in question (1)
As regards question (2) I am interested in the success rates for such procedures in so far as you can provide that. I should like the Worcestershire / City of Worcester details if available but if not collated with that degree of regional precision then whatever statistics are available identified by region.
If available statistics for other than Worcestershire in relation to (1) and (2) above would be appreciated which would assist me compare available services and outcomes between NHS England areas.
Yours sincerely,
andrew brown

Dear Mr Brown,
Re: Freedom of Information request (Our Ref: FOI-011545)
Thank you for your clarified Freedom of Information (FOI) request dated 12

For reference, your original request read:
“1. I would like to know whether a NHS patient in Worcestershire
(a) can be referred to NHS services for specialist NHS funded
endodontist treatment with regards to upper molar RCT or indeed other
teeth
(b) what is the criteria for that to happen and how are such

general dentistry in any statistical configuration such as for example
(a) By type of tooth such as upper molar. pre molar etc
(b) whether or not the tooth is a previously restored or RCT tooth”
NHS England holds some information relevant to your request.
We have liaised with the relevant departments within NHS England and are
in a position to provide the following.
With regard to question 1(a) - A patient can be referred to Birmingham
Dental Hospital or any Dental Hospital for specialist endodontic care to
upper molars but the dentition would need to fulfil the referral criteria.
With regard to question 1(b) - The following is information is taken from
the restorative specification from one of NHS England’s providers:
It should be noted that providing the medical history does not dictate
otherwise the following are not considered appropriate reasons for
referral:
1. Endodontic treatment:
a) Second and third molar teeth unless there is an unusual or
compelling clinical need.
b) Where the long-term viability of the tooth is in question.
NHS England does not hold and recorded information with regard to the rest
of the information requested. It may help if we explain that NHS England
does not currently collect separate waiting time information for
endodontics. Referral to Treatment (RTT) information would be within the
category “other” which encompasses a large number of specialties and local
service level information was collected previously collectively for
restorative dentistry rather than endodontics.
We do not currently collect information on endodontic outcomes – we will
be reviewing this as part of the implementation of the commissioning guide
when released.
We also do not currently collect information on endodontic referrals – we
will be reviewing this pending introduction of a referral management
system.
Detailed information on endodontic outcomes is not part of the Dental
Assurance Framework (DAF) dataset.
Further information relating to your request may be held at service level
by the Birmingham Dental Hospital. Please note that this is likely to
cover a regional rather than local footprint. We have included the link
below to the Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust contact
page, as they are responsible for the dental hospital, should you wish to
re-submit your request:
