Dear Niki Nakamura,

Thank you for your initial response.

I note that you have asked me to clarify my request. In particular, I am seeking information relating to any correspondence between the Dept for Education and the Academy regarding the process for becoming an Academy. As I am sure you will appreciate, the Steiner education system is somewhat controversial and some people do have concerns about it. I would have expected this to be a point of discussion between the Academy and the DOE. I also note that other organisations may hold this information but are not subject to FOIA. I would assume that the Academy may hold this information. I also note that some information is held off site and has been archived. It is my understanding that this information is still subject to the FOIA subject to cost limits. Can you therefore consider the provision of this information. I hope this has clarified this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Shelly Shriver

Dear Shelly,
In response to your email of December 29th 2011:
We are aware that there was some opposition to the idea of state-funding for a Steiner school in some quarters, but that this opposition was not communicated directly to the predecessor school – Hereford Waldorf School – or the Steiner Schools’ Movement (SWSF). As far as I am aware, there is no correspondence relating to concerns between the predecessor school and the Department for Education. This may be because the principle of establishing a Steiner Academy had already been agreed before it was decided that the Steiner Academy would be in Herefordshire. This agreement in principle was the result of an effective lobbying effort by the Steiner schools’ national body. Subsequently, a piece of research into Steiner schools was commissioned by the Department, which concluded that there would be benefits for the education system as a whole if other systems of education were included in the mainstream -
(http://www.steiner-waldorf.org/actualite...).

We are unable to provide you with correspondence to support your research into the range of views regarding the merits, including different models of education as part of mainstream provision. You may be interested to note that a political commitment to diversity of provision has brought England into line with the diversity of State-funded provision that has been on offer for a long time in mainland Europe, where there are many large State-funded Steiner schools. There they are accepted as a normal part of mainstream provision.
