Academic journal costs

The request was partially successful.

Dear Anglia Ruskin University,

For the years 2015 and 2016, please publish the total amount paid to each of the following publishers for academic journals:

Wiley
Springer
Elsevier
Taylor & Francis
De Gruyter
Sage
Royal Society of Chemistry
Institute of Physics Publishing

I understand that your expenditure records may be held in academic financial years rather than calendar years. If so, I am happy for the response to be provided in the same format, with figures for 2014/15, and 2015/16.

The figures should include payments made directly to the publishers as well as any payments made to subscription agents or intermediaries for the purchase of, and/or access to, the publishers' academic journals. They should also include payment for journal packages such as Jisc Collections agreements, as well as for individual journals. Please include VAT where possible.

Yours faithfully,

Stuart Lawson

Dear Mr Lawson,

Thank you for your request.

I am unable to provide a breakdown of subscriptions by publisher as our subscription agent does not provide this information.

Kind regards

Dear Jackie,

Well that's very interesting. You were able to provide this information in previous years (e.g. https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/a..., https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/a..., https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/e...) so could you tell me what has changed please? I find it extremely unlikely that you don't know how much is paid to some of the publishers, such as Elsevier's ScienceDirect collection, which are single lump sum payments each year. If you could tell me how much was spent in 2014, I don't understand why you can't for subsequent years.

If you subscribe to some bundles that contain journals from multiple publishers, so it is not possible to unpick how much is spent on journals from each individual publisher, then please ignore those type of bundle - just provide the expenditure that you can trace.

Yours sincerely,

Stuart Lawson

Dear Mr Lawson,

I note that you have asked, what has changed. The availability of expenditure data on individual journal subscriptions on a publisher by publisher basis is dependent on the data reporting tools available us. We have changed our subscription agent and our library management system, which is likely to have had an impact on this, should this data have been possible to retrieve in the past.

I attach here the information that is held.

If you are not satisfied with our response to your request for information you can contact us to ask for our decision to be reviewed by our Secretary & Clerk.

If you are still not satisfied following this, you can then make an
appeal to the Information Commissioner, who is the statutory regulator
for Freedom of Information.

The address is: Office of the Information Commissioner, Wycliffe
House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 5AF.

Tel: 01625 545700.

This completes your request.
