The request was partially successful.

Dear Yorkshire Water Services Limited,

Hi, while walking on your land we found several traps with live animal in them. Three days later we revisited and found them all to be dead, they seemed to have died of heat exhaustion and lack of water.

Can you tell me how long it takes for an animal to die in these traps?

Can you tell me the purpose of snares, Larsen traps and pole traps all of which have been found on your land?

Can you tell me what risk assessments you have carried out on Pheasant shoots on your land and what you do to avoid people being shot or animals poisoned through eating rotting animals that are full of lead shot?

Yours faithfully,

Mr Williams

EIR Compliance, Yorkshire Water Services Limited

Dear Mr Williams,

Thank you for your recent e-mail (appended).

As a water utility we are required, upon receiving a request for
environmentally related information, to disclose that information in
compliance with the  Environmental Information Regulations 2004 (EIRs).
With respect to the questions contained in your email, we don’t deem to
fall within the scope of the EIRs,  however, we reply as follows.

Answers to your questions are as follows:

Can you tell me how long it takes for an animal to die in these traps?

Yorkshire Water does not have this information.

Can you tell me the purpose of snares, Larsen traps and pole traps all of
which have been found on your land?

The traps were not set by Yorkshire Water or under the instruction of
Yorkshire Water. The purpose of the traps is known by those who set the
traps and not Yorkshire Water.

Can you tell me what risk assessments you have carried out on Pheasant
shoots on your land and what you do to avoid people being shot or animals
poisoned through eating rotting animals that are full of lead shot?

Yorkshire Water does not lease any land for Pheasant shooting. Pheasant
shooting may take place on Yorkshire Water land where the rights to shoot
are owned by a 3^rd party.

Further information:

With respect to shooting, the shooting leases we have over YW land are for
grouse shooting. This is where the birds are wild on the moor and can be
shot during the season starting on 12 August. Pheasant shooting is where
the birds are bred and large numbers purchased and put on the land to rear
– and then are shot during that season – starting 1 October. We do not
have any let pheasant shoots on our land. Some private shoots may put some
pheasants down on our land but this would be out of our control.
Information on our approach to land management and shooting can be found
on our web site at  [1]https://www.yorkshirewater.com/shooting

With respect to traps, if anyone suspects that an illegal activity is
being carried out they should report it to the appropriate authorities for
investigation. This could include the use of illegal and inhuman traps or
in areas of animal welfare. YW will fully cooperate in any investigation
where it is found to be on its land. If YW is passed information
indicating an activity on its land which is not legal or falls outside
permitted tenancy agreements, we will act quickly and investigate and take
any action required.  We can’t comment further specifically on the traps
you mentioned as you don’t mention when and where you found them.

We hope that the above information is helpful to you.

Regards,

Danuta
