AALA/AALS registered centres that cater for Disabled people

Health and Safety Executive did not have the information requested.

Dear Health and Safety Executive,

I telephoned your helpline just now and asked to be put through to the Adventure Activities and Licensing Authority department, to be told that no such organisation exists at the HSE and that this would be the local authority. When I proved that the AALA exists and that it is the HSE, by getting the advisor to go to the AALA website, she was then unable to put me through or provide a telephone number. Not good.

The information I was attempting to ascertain is a list of AALA licensed activity centres that specialise in disability, and in particular that provide respite care. I am aware of the three Calvert Trust centres (including the one centre in Kielder that does respite), Badaguish (does respite), Bendrigg (doesn't do respite) and the Jubilee Sailing Trust (sort of does respite ish.) Are there others?

Yours faithfully,

Doug Paulley

Dear Mr Paulley,

Thank you for your email which was passed to me as I have the policy lead
on the adventure activities licensing authority. I have attached the
response to your request for information under the Freedom of Information
Act to this email. I would also like to reassure you that we have reviewed
the guidance given to HSE staff that take calls from the public as a
result of your email. I am sorry that you were not given accurate
information at that time.

Kind Regards

Tony

Dear Health and Safety Executive,

Thank you.

I don't think it will make any difference, but I didn't refer to young people. I'm interested in adventure centres that do respite for disabled adults such as me. I'm 35, a wheelchair user with care needs and I go for respite care and adventure activities at the Calvert Trust Kielder. I know Bendrigg do this as well.

Do you not record this information at all? Do centres not tell you in their description if they primarily specialise in adventure activities for disabled people?

Thanks

Dear Health and Safety Executive,

Please can you help me by telling me who may have such information, or how to get the information, or provide any other assistance you can under section 14. I don't know how to get this info.

Yours faithfully,

Dear Mr Paulley,
I am sorry that I could not give you the information you are looking for. AALA only applies to services offered to those under 18. We do not hold records on whether or not the centre offers services for disabled people specifically as this is not a condition of licensing.
It may be that groups organising respite care have a list of centres that offer respite for disabled adults?
I am not aware of any 'register' held by the industry.
Kind Regards
Tony

Hello,

That's great, thank you. Apologies, I hadn't realised the AALA only registers for centres that do stuff with people under 18. I saw the certificate at the Calvert Trust Kielder; I guess they are registered as they do work with people under 18 as well as people such as me over 18.

Dear Mr Paulley,

Further to our earlier email conversation. As promised I have asked
contacts who work in the outdoors sector if there is a list of outdoor
activity providers that offer respite care. They have given me a couple
of contacts that might be helpful to you. As you pointed out the Calvert
Trust have three centres. However, they can also advise on other centres
that they have contact with if you get in touch with them. I have been
told that Scope also provide details of some centres that offer respite
care. The Royal Yachting Association also have a sailability scheme if
you are interested in sailing.

The Adventure Activates Licensing senior inspector for the Midlands who
has a good knowledge of centres in your area, has also offered to help
you find a centre should you need his assistance. His name is Kevin and
his number is 07899 960636 (I have not passed on any of your details,
but please mention my name if you ring him).

I hope you find this helpful and are able to access the activity you are
interested in.

Kind Regards

Tony
