A list of 'Villages' and 'Neighbourhoods' within the Legible London wayfinding scheme

The request was partially successful.

Frankie Roberto

Dear Transport for London,

I am a great admirer of the work you've done on improving pedestrian wayfinding through the Legible London scheme.

I understand that the system identifies 'Areas' (such as 'West End'), 'Villages' (such as 'Soho') and Neighbourhoods (such as 'Seven Dials').

I would like to request of these place names, their categorisations (as Area / Village / Neighbourhood) and, if possible, either a latitude and longitude representing the centre of that area, or the shapefile representing its boundary.

To clarify, this isn't a request for the base map, which I understand is derived from Ordnance Survey and copyrighted.

If possible, it'd be great to have the list as a spreadsheet or CSV file(s).

Yours faithfully,

Frankie Roberto

Dear Mr Roberto

Our Ref:         FOI-0348-1415

Thank you for your e-mail received on 5 June 2014 asking for information
about villages and neighbourhoods in Legible London.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of
the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can
confirm we hold some of the information you require.

Please find attached a list of ‘Neighbourhood’ and ‘Villages’ used in
Legible London. We do not hold shapefiles describing the extent nor
centre-point co-ordinates that detail their precise location as we have
not had a need to define exactly where one village or neighbourhood ends
and another begins.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable
to access it for some reason, please feel free to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to
appeal.

Dear Gemma Jacob,

Many thanks for sending me the lists of Neighbourhood and Villages within the Legible London scheme.

Do you also have a list of 'Areas' (such as 'West End')?

I understand that you do not hold shapefiles or centrepoints for these areas, as the scheme does not require precision (given people's vague sense of geography). However, do you hold any information which would enable me to gain an approximate sense of where these areas are in relation to each other? This could be a basic map showing just the area names, or the locations of Legible London signage within each area.

Many thanks,

Yours sincerely,

Frankie Roberto

Dear Mr Roberto

Our Ref:         FOI-0453-1415

Thank you for your e-mail received on 23 June 2014 asking for further
information about Legible London.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of
the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and TfL’s information access policy.

TfL does not hold the information you have requested. We do not have a
map showing the locations of Legible London signage within each area or a
map that shows where the areas are in relation to each other.  We are
currently working with the boroughs to verify information and pull data
together so that we have a comprehensive record of where the Legible
London signs are located. We estimate this work will be completed towards
the end of this year.

You may wish to enter the names of the areas previously listed into a
search engine such as Google Maps as you will probably be able to gain
some idea of where the areas are from a basic internet search.

Please accept our apologies that we are unable to assist you further on
this occasion.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to
appeal.

Dear Gemma Jacob,

Many thanks for your reply. I understand that you do not yet have a comprehensive list of locations of the Legible London signage, and I welcome your work to build a comprehensive list of these in collaboration with the boroughs.

Could you let me know if there is currently a partial list or database of these locations which you would be able to share with me?

I also asked for a list of the 'Area' names within the scheme (e.g. 'West Area') – i.e. the top level of the naming hierarchy. I appreciate that this is probably a very short list, however I'd really appreciate seeing it.

Yours sincerely,

Frankie Roberto

Thank you for your further e-mail.

We do not have an ‘Areas’ category, only the ‘Neighbourhood’ and
‘Villages’ that have already been provided, therefore we do not hold the
requested information. We also do not have a map showing the geographic
location of the ‘Villages’ and ‘Neighbourhoods’ so cannot provide this.

Please accept our apologies that we are unable to assist you further on
this occasion.
