A Level Maths in Economics Courses
Dear University of Durham,
I am making a FOI request regarding A Level Maths in relation to three courses that involve the study of economics.
I would like to know the specific number of students (or as close to it as possible) separately in each of the last five UCAS cycles who were permitted to take the following courses WITHOUT A Level Maths. This refers to ANYONE who has taken part in these courses in each of the last five years - whether given an original offer, given an offer via clearing, or via any type of course transfer to them pre or post results day. The courses are:
- Politics, Philosophy and Economics (VL52)
- Liberal Arts (LA01), in which Economics was included as one of the disciplines
- Combined Honours in Social Sciences (LMV0) in which Economics was included as one of the disciplines.
Yours faithfully,
Alec Gurdon
Thank you for your email.
If you have submitted a Freedom of Information Request or Subject Access
Request, please accept this as acknowledgement of your request.
All other enquiries will be responded to in due course.
Yours sincerely

Dear Requester
Thank you for your request for information from Durham University.
Colleagues have provided the information below/attached in response to
your questions.

Response:
Please note the following about data that has been provided:
• All data has been rounded to the nearest 5 as per HESA guidelines on
rounding and suppression of data in order to prevent identification of
individuals. As such the exact figures are being refused by virtue of
s.40 (personal information) of the Freedom of Information Act.
• Data has been limited to applicants who received an offer
pre-enrolment.
• Data has been provided for the 5 most recent complete admissions
cycles: 2019-20 (entry 2020), 2020-21(entry 2021), 2021-22 (entry
2022), 2022-23(entry 2023) and 2023-24 (entry 2024).
• All applicants who received an offer (conditional and unconditional)
for course VL52 (BA PPE) were included. For courses LA01 (BA Liberal
Arts) and LMV0 (BA Combined Honours in Social Sciences) where students
can choose the subjects they study, only offer holders who selected
Economics as one of their 4 options were included. Please note this
data is based on their selection at the point of application and they
may have changed their subject options during the application stage or
even after enrolment for those that went on to enrol.
• Predicted A Levels of offer holders and A Levels already achieved at
application stage have been used for the analysis and the data limited
to students who were predicted to take at least 3 A Levels.
As your request was for A Level Maths specifically, alternative Maths
qualifications have not been included in the data provided. Offer holders
taking alternative Maths qualifications would have an A Level equivalent
requirement for their particular qualification.
We receive applications from students who take a number of different
qualifications both from UK and overseas, and some have a mixture of
qualification types.
Course Admissions cycle
2019-20 2020-21 2021-22 2022-23 2023-24

Offer Holders No Maths A Level 5 5 5 0 5
LMV0
Offer Holders No Maths A Level 5 5 0 0 5
VL52
Offer Holders No Maths A Level 0 0 0 0 5
Note for the very small number of applicants who were offered a place
without a predicted A Level in Maths at application stage, they either had
an alternative maths qualification which was accepted, their offer
conditions stated that they would need to obtain an A Level in Maths to be
accepted at confirmation or (in the case of LA01/LMV0) their offer
conditions stated they would not be eligible to study the Economics option
if they did not obtain an A Level in Maths.
If you are dissatisfied with the University’s response to your freedom of
information request, you can ask us to internally review our handling of
