Dear Connor Johnston,
Thank you for your e-mail of 22 Feb 2021 in which you request the following:
It has recently come to my attention that your department launched an investigation into an
encounter in Scotland (knows as the A70 Incident) which happened on 17th August, 1992, near the
Harperrig reservoir. I believe the probe was launched into this incident by yourselves on 1996, 4
years after it occurred. The document (apparently headlined) "Unexplained Aerial Sighting" is based
on the evidence that Garry wood gave to yourselves about his supposed sighting and encounter
with a UFO.
I was made aware this file is now declassified and free to the public. Can I please request the
file/documentation you have on this.
Please accept my apologies for the lateness of this response. This was due to remote working and
limited access to resources while working under the current Covid-19 restrictions.
I am treating your correspondence as a request for information under the Freedom of Information
Act 2000 (FOIA). A search for the information you have requested has now concluded. I can confirm
that the Ministry of Defence (MOD) holds no information in scope of your request.
Section 16(1) of the Act requires the public authority to provide advice and assistance wherever
possible. All files related to UFO reports have already been transferred to The National Archives
(TNA) and further information can be found at
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ufos/. You may also find it helpful to know that the MOD has no opinion on the existence of extra-
terrestrials. This is because, in over 50 years, no UFO sighting reporting to the Department has
indicated the existence of any military threat to the UK and it was deemed more valuable to prioritise
MOD staff towards other Defence-related activities.
You may also be interested to know that the MODs position on UFOs and UAP was discussed
recently during a House of Lords question session. For a full transcript of the debate you can visit:

Information Commissioner under the provisions of Section 50 of the Freedom of Information Act.
