A189 Wansbeck Bridge Speed Camera Removal

The request was partially successful.

Dear Northumberland County Council.

It was my understanding and since confirmed by Northumbria Police that there used to be a fixed speed camera positioned on the A189 “Spine Road” in the vicinity of the bridge which crosses the Wansbeck River.

As a resident of Blyth - I am aware of the increasing number of accidents on the A189 and it makes me wonder why enforcement methods such as this were removed. I assume the camera due to where it was sighted, proved to be an effective tool to reduce speeding on that section of road. I understand cameras are often decommissioned if their useful life has expired, the traffic situation has improved, or the continual upkeep and maintenance is not cost effective due to improved driver behaviour - however I can’t see any of these reasons being the case in regards to the A189 section of road.

I previously submitted a FOI request to Northumbria Police who have since advised you are in a position to answer the following:

-Will the camera be replaced?
-In light of the continuation and increase of accidents, are there to be any permanent speed control measures introduced onto the A189, mainly between the A19 Moor Farm Roundabout and the Woodhorn (A197) roundabout?

Yours faithfully,
Paul Rowland.

Dear Enquirer,
FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT REQUEST

I refer to your Freedom of Information request in relation to the fixed
speed camera positioned on the A18.
Right of Access

Section 1(1) of the Act provides any person making a request for
information to a public authority is entitled.

(a) to be informed in writing by the public authority whether it holds
information of the description specified in the request (which Section
1(6) of the Act designates as the "duty to confirm or deny"), and

(b) if that is the case, to have that information communicated to him.

The right is to obtain access to the information itself and not to the
document or record which contains it.

The Act creates a general right of access to information held by public
authorities subject to various exemptions.

Northumberland County Council confirms that it holds the information you
have requested, please see the (attached/following) information in
response.

We understand that the speed camera in question was decommissioned many
years ago. We do not hold information within our records as to the reasons
for this.
Given the recent concerns raised, the location has been added to the Road
Safety Unit at Northumbria Police's Operation Modero database, and they
will be looking to carry out enforcement of the speed limit with their
mobile camera vans in the near future.

For information we have recently introduced Dynamic Queue Warning Signs on
the southbound approach to Moor Farm to forewarn motorists of queuing
traffic ahead at Moor Farm Roundabout.
