A106 Admissions information for graduate applicants at The University of Manchester

The request was successful.

Dear University of Manchester,

Could I request the following information regarding admission of graduate applicants to your A106 Medicine:

1.) Are graduates considered alongside school leavers in the admissions procedure, or are graduates 'ringfenced' separately in the admissions process?

1b.) Number of places reserved for graduates on the A106 course (if any)?

2.) How are the academics (excluding UCAT) of graduates scored? Specifically, are we scored on our degree class alone, or are our A-Levels and GCSEs taken into account, and does the scoring process pre-interview disadvantage graduates in any way?

2b.) Are those graduates who achieved higher in their A-Levels/Degree/GCSEs given any advantage in the selection process?

3. If available, do you have the median UCAT scores of graduates ONLY who were subsequently invited to interview and given an offer for the past 2 application cycles? N.B. I have seen the admissions statistics available on your website, but this only refers to the entire application cohort and not graduates specifically. If this question cannot be fulfilled in the allotted time then please let me know

4.) Are those who score Band 1 in the SJT section of the UCAT given preference over those who score Band 2 in the selection process i.e. your website indicates that those who score Band 1/2 are given preference over those who score in Band 3, but are Bands 1 and 2 also separated like this?

5.) Post-interview, which factors are considered when making a candidate an offer - is it solely interview performance or other aspects of the application too, if there are other aspects please include what these are?

Thank you :)

Dear Dhylan,

Thank you for your request for information received by The University of
Manchester on 31 August 2021 and please see our responses in red below.

Could I request the following information regarding admission of graduate
applicants to your A106 Medicine:

1.) Are graduates considered alongside school leavers in the admissions
procedure, or are graduates 'ringfenced' separately in the admissions
process?

Please see [1]https://www.bmh.manchester.ac.uk/study/m... for
more information on the selection process. We do not have ‘ringfenced
places’ for specific students.

1b.) Number of places reserved for graduates on the A106 course (if any)?

Information not held.

2.) How are the academics (excluding UCAT) of graduates scored?
Specifically, are we scored on our degree class alone, or are our A-Levels
and GCSEs taken into account, and does the scoring process pre-interview
disadvantage graduates in any way?

The term ‘Academics’ is normally used to refer to members of staff in a
University. For the purpose of this request, we have assumed that you mean
qualifications (as you refer to degree classifications). We do not use a
‘points based scoring’ process, our admissions selection is threshold
based, applicants who meet our minimum criteria progress to the next stage
of the process. GCSE grades are normally disregarded for graduate
applicants (subject to meeting the minimum requirements for Maths and
English Language). A-Level grades are normally disregarded, subject to
meeting the minimum requirement of BBB at first sit.

2b.) Are those graduates who achieved higher in their
A-Levels/Degree/GCSEs given any advantage in the selection process?

Information not held.

Please see [2]https://www.bmh.manchester.ac.uk/study/m... for
more information on the selection process.

Our website also provides minimum requirements for graduate applicants:

[3]https://www.manchester.ac.uk/study/under...

3. If available, do you have the median UCAT scores of graduates ONLY who
were subsequently invited to interview and given an offer for the past 2
application cycles? N.B. I have seen the admissions statistics available
on your website, but this only refers to the entire application cohort and
not graduates specifically. If this question cannot be fulfilled in the
allotted time then please let me know

We do not use this information in the normal screening process and
therefore it is not available in a reportable format. Obtaining it would
require manual interrogation of each record (>3400 records) and would
exceed the 18 hour ‘Appropriate Limit’ (as defined in the Freedom of
Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations
2004). As a result, Section 12 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000
applies and regrettably this task cannot be undertaken at this stage. This
email serves to act as a refusal notice for this request, as per Section
17 (5) of the Act.

4.) Are those who score Band 1 in the SJT section of the UCAT given
preference over those who score Band 2 in the selection process i.e. your
website indicates that those who score Band 1/2 are given preference over
those who score in Band 3, but are Bands 1 and 2 also separated like this?

We reserve the right to use any information available to us to prioritise
applicants, including SJT band score. Applicants with higher UCAT
cognitive and SJT scores would be more likely to be invited to interview.

5.) Post-interview, which factors are considered when making a candidate
an offer - is it solely interview performance or other aspects of the
application too, if there are other aspects please include what these are?

Our normal process is to rank applicants by interview score but we reserve
the right to use any information available to us to prioritise applicants
for offer making.

I hope this response is of use to you.

Kind regards

Sharon
