FOI, University of Birmingham

Dear Matthew

Thanks you for your email below.

Section 8(1) of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) sets out the
criteria for making a valid request.  Section 8(1)(b) states that that a
request must include the name of the applicant and an address for
correspondence.

The Information Commissioner has issued guidance on what information would
constitute a valid name. This guidance states that title and/or first name
and surname satisfy this requirement.

Example: Mr Arthur Thomas Roberts could satisfy section 8(1)(b) of the
FOIA by stating his name in a request for information as "Arthur Roberts",
"A. T. Roberts", or "Mr Roberts", but not by stating his name as "Arthur"
or "A.T.R."

The University of Birmingham confirms that it is applying this guidance
and therefore cannot progress your request until you have provided a valid
name.

Please remember to quote the reference number above in any future
communications.

Regards

Freedom of Information Team
University of Birmingham
