The request was successful.

Dear Cardiff Medical School,

1. For the medicine A100 undergraduate course, exactly how is the academic score generated that is used to assess whether to progress applicants to the selector/personal statement stage?

2. If a GCSE point based system is used, what has the required mark been for the application to progress over the past 5 years?

3. Is the reference used as well as personal statement at the selector stage?

4. Can the admissions policy for September 2017 entry please be attached.

Thank you for your assistance.

Best wishes,
Mr Gladwin

Dear Mr Gladwin

I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request below
dated 4^th August 2016 in which you requested information regarding A100
Medicine Admissions.

For ease of reference, I have reproduced your questions below and set out
our corresponding responses.

1. For the medicine A100 undergraduate course, exactly how is the academic
score generated that is used to assess whether to progress applicants to
the selector/personal statement stage?

In order to establish an applicant’s potential to cope with the academic
rigours of the programme, the initial assessment consists of screening
applications according to whether they meet the specified minimum academic
requirements shown in Appendices A and B of the Admissions Policy. In the
absence of documented extenuating circumstances provided at the time of
application, applicants who do not meet these minimum requirements will be
rejected and notified of this decision by UCAS.

The remaining applications will be ranked according to their overall
certificated academic qualifications, usually GCSE and GCE A level grades,
Baccalaureate points or degree classifications.  AS Level grades and
predicted results are not used.  From this ranking students will be
identified for assessment of non-academic attributes and for interview.

This means that not all applicants who have met the minimum academic
requirements will proceed to the next ‘non-academic’ stage of the
selection process; it will depend on their ranking, and consequently, the
competition. Once academic ranking of all applications is complete, a
cut-off point is decided. It should be noted that the cut-off might change
from one cycle to another, as it depends on the overall standard of
applications received in each cycle.

2. If a GCSE point based system is used, what has the required mark been
for the application to progress over the past 5 years?

For the last 3 years the cut-off score has been 26. The previous 2 years
it was 25.

(A* = 3 points; A – 2 points; B = 1 point). (The admissions policy
explains this in more detail – appendix a and b)

3. Is the reference used as well as personal statement at the selector
stage?

This information can be found in the Admissions Policy under section 7 –
stage 2.

4. Can the admissions policy for September 2017 entry please be attached.

The admissions policy for A100 Medicine for 2017 entry is available on the
University website at:

information is reasonably accessible to you by other means and is exempt
from disclosure under section 21 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

However as an exception, as this information is readily available, a copy

I trust this information satisfies your enquiry.  The University has a
