A100 selection process
Dear University of Dundee,
Could you confirm what selection process you are using for your A100 medicine course for RUK applicants, please.
I would appreciate any scoring system you may use for GCSEs and A levels and what proportion of overall ranking for selection for interview each of these is given
Could you also please tell me how you allocate the points for the UCAT, eg is it in deciles and if so are those based on Pearson Vue scoring or the applicants to Aston?
Could you then also confirm what score was needed for a standard, non-contextual applicant for 2018 and 2019 entry, please?
Yours faithfully,
Judy Macdonald
Thank you for your email. If your message contains a request for
information the University will respond no later than 20 working days from
its receipt (or one month from receipt in the case of requests for your
own personal information).

Dear University of Dundee,
Sorry, I have erroneously mentioned Aston in my original request, obviously, that is meant to refer to Dundee!
Yours faithfully,

Dear Ms Macdonald,
Thank you for your request for information from the University of Dundee.
Colleagues provide data in response to your questions below. Where
information is not held please treat this email as notice of that per S.17
of FoI(S)A.
1) Could you confirm what selection process you are using for your A100
medicine course for RUK applicants, please.
For entry requirements please
see: [1]https://www.dundee.ac.uk/undergraduate/m...
2) I would appreciate any scoring system you may use for GCSEs and A
levels and what proportion of overall ranking for selection for interview
each of these is given. Could you also please tell me how you allocate the
points for the UCAT, eg is it in deciles and if so are those based on
Pearson Vue scoring or the applicants to Aston?
For school leavers we give 60% weighting to the academic score and 40%
weighting to the UCAT score. We use the UCAT score by categorising the
applicants in deciles of UCAT performance. More information about the UCAT
can be found at [2]https://www.ucat.ac.uk/. Applications submitted without
the UCAT test will not be considered.
Relevant work experience is also essential, we encourage up to two weeks
of medically-related work or shadowing experience. We also look at
extra-curricular activities, such as sports, hobbies, part-time work,
volunteering, etc. which can demonstrate high motivation, commitment,
social contribution, and strong communication and leadership skills.
All applications must be submitted through UCAS by the deadline. All
applications are considered on an individual basis, and I must highlight
that simply meeting the entry criteria does not guarantee an offer of
interview or place at Dundee University.
3) Could you then also confirm what score was needed for a standard,
non-contextual applicant for 2018 and 2019 entry, please?
The School of Medicine does not have a cut off for UCAT.
I trust this information is helpful, please let me know if I can be of any
more help in future.
Kind regards,
Alan

Dear FreedomOfInformation,
Thank you for your comments, however, they do not really answer the questions I asked.
My request was "I would appreciate any scoring system you may use for GCSEs and A levels" and you have not told me how you score these, eg what points are awarded for each grade, how many GCSEs are scored, what points are awarded for each A level and whether achieved grades achieve more points than predicted? I would be grateful if you could provide this information, as requested, please.
I requested whether any points awarded for UCAT were based on Pearson view UCAT deciles or those of your own applicants?
In my question 3), I was not asking what UCAT score was needed, I was asking what total score was needed on your own scoring sytem to achieve an interview for 2018 and 2019 entry,
I would be grateful if you would answer the specific questions adked, rather than vague non-specifics that are not what was requested.
Many thanks for your help with this.
Yours sincerely,
Judy Macdonald

Dear Ms Macdonald,
Thank you for your request that the University review its response to your request of 23 August. Having reviewed Mr Coull’s response to your questions as stated at the time, I am satisfied that the University provided appropriate information in response to your questions as understood. However, your subsequent message includes clarification concerning the information you seek and colleagues are happy to address those questions directly.
1. Points awarded for each grade, how many GCSEs are scored, what points are awarded for each A level and whether achieved grades achieve more points than predicted?
Up to 8 GCSE results normally considered. Maximum points if 6 or more at grade 9/A*. Up to 4 A levels normally considered. Maximum points if AAAA or A*A*A*. Slight extra weighting to achieved grades. In order to ensure that applicants presenting predicted A levels are not disadvantaged relative to Scottish applicants in particular (most of whom present achieved Higher grades), we apply compensatory extra weighting to their achieved GCSE results.
2. Are points awarded for UCAT based on Pearson view UCAT deciles or those of your own applicants?
Deciles of our own applicant pool, although these are not usually very different from the overall (Pearson) deciles.
3. I was not asking what UCAT score was needed, I was asking what total score was needed on your own scoring system to achieve an interview for 2018 and 2019 entry.
I am afraid that the University is unable to release this information to you. To place information concerning thresholds into the public domain is likely to prejudice substantially the integrity of the admissions process. The University is not prepared to release information that might create the perception of a ‘target’ or similar, leading to applicants focusing on that rather than the totality of their application. Consequently, under S.16 of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (FoI(S)A) I confirm that:
a. The University holds information on the assessment of the interview process;
b. The University claims that information is exempt from disclosure;
c. The University claims the exemption in S.30(c) of FoI(S)A; that the disclosure of this information would prejudice substantially the effective conduct of public affairs;
d. The University claims the exemption for the reasons detailed above.
The University is required to have regard to the public interest in the application of this exemption. The University asserts that there is a greater public interest in it maintaining a robust and fair admissions process than in the disclosure of detailed information on how applications are scored, over and above that already provided. The University asserts that the release of this information would not significantly improve the public understanding of the admissions process given the amount of information already in the public domain - https://www.dundee.ac.uk/undergraduate/m....
I hope that this is helpful, but if you have additional questions, please feel free to contact us.
Kind regards,
Alan
