Freedom of Information, University of Leeds

Dear Peter,

Freedom of Information Response (Our Ref: K/22/016)

Thank you for your Freedom of Information (FOI) request dated 18th January 2022, reference K/22/016.

Your request read:

"Please may you provide the data for following requests regarding the past 3 complete application cycles for home domicile students applying to the A100 Medicine course:

1 ) The number of applicants, applicants interviewed, applicants given an offer

2 ) The average BMAT score of applicants, applicants interviewed, applicants given an offer in each section (letter is not required for section 3)

3 ) Details on the selection process for inviting applicants to interview and then being given offer including but not limited to any internal scoring system or ranking process of applicants"

The University of Leeds holds this information.

1.

2021 entry

Applications received from Home students (excluding EU): 1980
Home students interviewed: 940
Home applicants given offer: 300

2020 entry

Applications received from UK/EU students: 2004
Home students interviewed: 993
Home applicants given offer: 365

2019 entry

Applications received from UK/EU students: 2065
Home students interviewed: 948
Home applicants given offer: 385

Please note, we do not hold information which shows the number of interview offers made. As such, the figures above demonstrate the number of interviews which were carried out.

2.

A combination score using academic achievement and BMAT is used to determine a rank for shortlisting to interview during the years in question. We therefore do not hold information regarding BMAT scores in the format you have requested. The BMAT raw scores were used in the following manner: all scores from applicants were put into a normal distribution curve. Those candidates who were in the highest 20% receive a score of five out of five, and those who were in the lowest 20% receive a score of one out of five. Everything in between is scored according to where they were placed in this distribution. As such, we do not retain raw scores and cannot, therefore, answer this question.

3.

For the years in question, invitation to interview was determined by a ranking, taking place after calculating the candidate’s academic score (i.e. GCSE and A-level or equivalent) when added to a score calculated from BMAT and is out of a total maximum score of 37. Within this score, 24 points are available for GCSEs (or equivalent) and 8 for predicted/achieved grades at A-level (or equivalent). The maximum score for BMAT is 5 points.

In order to achieve the full 27 points for GCSEs, candidates had to secure 8 GCSEs
with A* or 8/9 in each subject. 3 points were awarded for A* (or 8/9), 2 points for A
(or 7), and 1 point for B (or 5/6).

8 points were available for A-level grades already gained or predicted, with 8 points being awarded to candidates predicted AAA or above.

The BMAT raw scores were used in the following manner: All scores from applicants to MBChB Leeds were put into a normal distribution curve. Those candidates who were in the highest 20% receive a score of 5/5. Candidates who were in the lowest 20% receive a score of 1/5. Candidates in between were then scored according to where they were placed in this distribution.

Please note personal statements are not used in the shortlisting process.

Candidates are scored on attributes measured over a number of interview stations. Up until 2020 an 8 station multiple mini interview is used to assess candidates who are shortlisted to interview. In 2021, due to Covid-related restrictions this moved to a 6 station online multiple mini interview. The attribute scores are used to rank the candidates after interview and offers are made based on the interview ranking achieved by the candidate.

We hope this information is helpful. If you have any questions about this email, however, please do not hesitate to contact us on [University of Leeds request email]
