Dear Cardiff University,

My request is regarding statistics for the A100 medicine course. All requests are for the
2018/2019 cycle. If data for the 2018/2019 cycle is not possible, I would like it for the
2017/2018 cycle. Many thanks.

Please can I have the following anonymised data about the candidates who applied:

1. For each applicant, can I know their A-level predicted grades, GCSE grades, UCCAT score, BMAT score, whether they were successful in getting an interview and whether they were successful in getting a place?
2. For each applicant, can I also know whether they were home or international (if so whether they were an EU citizen)
3. Please can I know what type of school the applicant went to (independent, maintained,
grammar, academy or
boarding)?
4. Please could I have a breakdown of their UKCAT and BMAT scores by section
5. How their PS and interview performance was graded or scored
6. Whether they were on a gap year or taking a deferred place

Please can I have all this data in an Excel or at least a machine-readable format?

Yours faithfully,

Mr Forgan

InfoRequest, Cardiff University

Dear Mr Fogan

I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request dated
30/07/19 in which you requested information regarding A100 Admissions.

For ease of reference, I have reproduced your questions below and set out
our corresponding responses.

My request is regarding statistics for the A100 medicine course. All
requests are for the

2018/2019 cycle. If data for the 2018/2019 cycle is not possible, I would
like it for the

2017/2018 cycle. Many thanks.

Please can I have the following anonymised data about the candidates who
applied:

 1. For each applicant, can I know their A-level predicted grades, GCSE
grades, UCCAT score, BMAT score, whether they were successful in
getting an interview and whether they were successful in getting a
place?

Predicted grades are held in our system as free text and to extract them
and compose them into a data set would require a manual review of all
student records. The time involved in searching for and providing the
information you have requested would exceed the time limit (18 hours)
allowed under the Freedom of Information and Data Protection (Appropriate
Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004.  Accordingly section 12(2) of the
Freedom of Information Act 2000 will apply.

 2. For each applicant, can I also know whether they were home or
international (if so whether they were an EU citizen)

There were 2222 Home/EU and 482 Overseas applicants in total.

 3. Please can I know what type of school the applicant went to
(independent, maintained, grammar, academy or boarding)?

‘School type’ is a UCAS-owned data subset and may be requested from them.
The information that you have requested is already in the public domain
and is available through UCAS. Accordingly this information is reasonably
accessible to you by other means and is exempt from disclosure under
section 21 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

 4. Please could I have a breakdown of their UKCAT and BMAT scores by
section

We do not hold this information.

 5. How their PS and interview performance was graded or scored

Stage 2: Non-academic Requirements

Applicants who meet the minimum academic requirements and are sufficiently
highly ranked academically are assessed on non-academic criteria according
to the information in their personal statement and the referee’s report
given on the UCAS application form. Non-academic requirements will also be
assessed at any potential interview. Applications are reviewed by trained
selectors and the following are assessed:

•             Medical motivation and awareness of the career

•             Caring ethos and a sense of social awareness

•             Sense of responsibility

•             Evidence of a balanced approach to life

•             Evidence of self-directed learning and extracurricular
activities

•             Referee’s report

Multiple Mini Interviews:

The interviews focus on exploring the personal qualities and attributes
important in developing good doctors in the future.

No offers for a place to study Undergraduate Medicine at Cardiff
University will be made until all interviews have been completed to ensure
all applicants have an equal opportunity.

Various criteria are scored at each station, all stations are added
together to give a final interview score.

 6. Whether they were on a gap year or taking a deferred place

There were 86 deferred applicants.

I trust this information satisfies your enquiry.  The University has a
Freedom of Information Complaints Procedure should you feel dissatisfied
with this response or the way in which your request was handled.
Complaints must be made in writing and must set out why you believe the
University has not met its obligations under the Freedom of Information
Act.  You may email your complaint to [1][email address] where
it will be forwarded to the Director of Strategic Planning and Governance
who will be responsible for overseeing the review.

If you remain dissatisfied following the outcome of your complaint, you
have the right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner for
consideration.  The Information Commissioner can be contacted at the
following address: Information Commissioner's Office, Wycliffe House,

contact me.

Yours sincerely
