A100 medicine application statistics

The request was successful.

Dear University of Sheffield,

I am making a request regarding the statistics for the A100 UCAS cycle, regarding the 2014/2015 cycle or, if not possible, the 2013/2014. I hope I can get the information in a machine readable format such as Excel or PDF. Thank you very much and I hope this is not too much trouble.

1) The median and quartile ranges for the UMS average of the AS
levels of those applying and accepted.

2) The median and quartile ranges for the number of A* achieved at GCSE of those applying and accepted.

3) The median and quartile ranges for IB prediction of those applying and accepted.

4) The median and quartile ranges for predicted A level results and achieved of those applying and accepted.

5) The number of applicants, the number interviewed and the number of offers given.

6) I would also like any scoring or grading system used (such as for interview or personal statement) to assess candidates and if a form or such is available to record the performance, I would also kindly request this.

7) How many offers were given to international students/ people who applied during clearing.

8) The median and quartile ranges for UKCAT of those applying and accepted.

Yours faithfully,

Mr Harris

Dear Mr Harris

I write in response to your recent Freedom of Information request to
Sheffield University.

The University does not hold the information you have requested in
Questions 1 - 4 in such a way as would allow us to answer your questions.
Information is held against individual applicant records: we estimate that
it would take well over the 18 hour limit described in Section 12 of the
Freedom of Information Act to retrieve the information and carry out the
necessary calculations.

Section 12 states that 'Section 1(1) does not oblige a public authority to
comply with a request for information if the authority estimates that the
cost of complying with the request would exceed the appropriate limit.

The 'appropriate limit' is defined in Reg(3) of the Freedom of Information
and Data Protection (appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004,
Statutory Instrument 2004 No. 3244, as £450 or 18 hours (as defined in Reg
4(4) of the same Regulations). In determining whether to invoke the
Section 12 exemption, (exemption where the cost of compliance exceeds
appropriate limit), the University is entitled to take into account the
costs it reasonably expects to incur in:

determining whether it holds the information

locating the information, or a document containing it

retrieving the information, or a document containing it

extracting the information from a document containing it

The University has determined that to produce the information you request
would indeed take well over the appropriate limit, and that therefore the
exemption described in S.12 is applicable in this case.

Our responses with regard to your questions 5 - 8 are as follows:

Q5.     2014: Applicants:2310 Interviewed:588 Offers:363
          2015: Applicants:1779 Interviewed:574 Offers:387

Q6.     Score sheets attached

Q7.     NONE - generally we hold reserve lists and although we may process
these through the clearing system we do not officially enter clearing for
the A100 programme.

Q8.     The University only records whether candidates are above or below
UKCAT threshold.

I am required under the Act to inform you that if you have cause for
genuine complaint regarding our reply to your request for information, you
should write to the University FOI Unit, 10-12 Brunswick Street, Sheffield
S10 2FN or email [1][University of Sheffield request email] explaining why
you are not satisfied with the result.

If you still remain unsatisfied with the University's decision, you will
be entitled to complain to the Information Commissioner, Wycliffe House,
Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 5AF.

Yours sincerely
