UK/India Young Generation Network
1
Mission statement
“The UK-India Young Generation Network aims to expand,
enrich and energise relations between India and the UK by
fostering discussions amongst a network of diverse young
leaders to build shared approaches to 21st century political,
economic and social challenges.”
2
Objectives
•
To create a new, dynamic, self sustaining network of British and Indian young
leaders to broaden and strengthen the relationship between the UK and India for the
long term
•
Through discussion of shared challenges, to deepen understanding of each others’
perspectives, assumptions and interests
•
To raise awareness of sources of successful public policy, innovation and dynamism
in each others’ societies, to help identify opportunities for sharing ideas, approaches
and strategies which can benefit both countries
•
To generate recommendations which might be submitted to the Governments of
India and the UK, proposals which might be promoted through the Indian and UK
media, and ideas which can be implemented without reference to Government, by
leveraging the power of the organisations from which members of the Network are
drawn.
3
Key benefits
•
To give to young leaders from the UK and India access to a network of
exceptionally talented and motivated individuals of a calibre and influence in both
countries unavailable through any existing route
•
To help develop a much better understanding among influential young leaders in
both countries of the perspectives of the other on major domestic and global
challenges and of what drives each country’s approach
•
To encourage emerging leaders in both countries, particularly those involved in
public policy, business and the media, to look instinctively to each other as partners
of choice when seeking new ideas and looking to build collaborative international
ventures in their respective fields
•
To help bind India and the UK together in a dynamic and mutually beneficial
partnership in the 21st Century
4
How the Network will differ from existing UK-India
initiatives
•
It will be independent of Governments, mostly funded by private sector sponsorship
•
It will consist of
young leaders from a
range of sectors, not only business
•
It will have a demanding selection criteria, ensuring high calibre membership and
providing unparalleled networking opportunities for its members
•
It will be a source of innovative thinking, from the perspective of dynamic young
leaders, about the challenges both countries face
•
There will be specific output from the annual forums and from the virtual learning
groups which will meet between forums
•
The Network’s purpose and objectives will be endorsed by the Prime Ministers of
India and the UK, who will serve as Patrons and engage on suitable occasions with
the members and their ideas
5
How The Network would work in practice
•
Nominations for potential membership of the Network would be sought from the
Advisory Board, and through an open on-line application process
•
Common Purpose would help short-list candidates
•
The Advisory Board would make the final decision on which 20 Indian and 20
British young leaders would be selected as the first group of members.
•
Potential members would be drawn from Business, the Public sector, Politics,
Media, Civil society, Arts, Science and Academia
•
New members to meet in a Forum, probably in India, in December 2010
•
Members themselves to decide how to take Network forward, probably through a
combination of virtual meetings and one annual actual meeting, alternating between
the UK and India.
•
In subsequent years nominations for new membership will come from existing
members
6
Suggested governance structure
Patrons:

8
Patrons and Advisory Board
•
The role of the Patrons would simply be to lend their endorsement and prestige
to the Network. There would be no other duties asked.
•
If the Network proved a success, the Patrons might on suitable occasions wish
to meet members of the Network and listen to the ideas they had generated.
•
The Advisory Board would lend their support to the Network in different
ways: through sponsorship, the nomination of prospective members, hosting
and/or participating in the Network’s activities and broader intellectual support
and mentoring to the young leaders.
9
Annual Forums
•
Aim is that the first forum be held before the end of 2010, probably in India
•
The event would run for 3 days from Friday to Monday morning
•
This would include:
An opening meal, for members to get to know each other
Members elect debate – to comprise a facilitated discussion around [3/4] topical issues
affecting the two countries
Caffeine fuelled conversation breaks
Site visit, based on the theme of the forum
A day in the economic/socio/political context of the other country
Members elect to decide on last day on how to take Network forward
•
The debates will result in recommendations which might be submitted to the
Governments of India and the UK; proposals which might be promoted through the
Indian and UK media; and ideas which can be implemented without reference to

Network are drawn.
