Dear Mr Briscoe,

Apologies for the delay in responding to your Freedom of Information request of 25 August 2011, asking for copies of the diaries of the 'head of ONS' and the National Statistician for the last three years.

Since September 2009 the 'head of ONS' has been the Director General for ONS. This post has been held by two different people. Prior to September 2009, the National Statistician was the 'head of ONS'. Since September 2008 the post of National Statistician has also been held by two different people. The tables below give the names of the people holding each post and the period for which they held it.
Dates Director General for ONS
September 2009 - November 2009 Rolande Anderson
November 2009 to date Stephen Penneck

Dates National Statistician
August 2005 - August 2009 Karen Dunnell
September 2009 to date Jil Matheson

ONS uses the Lotus Notes application software to provide its email, calendar, document and records management and workflow functionality. The calendar of every member of staff is an integrated part of their email account. As the former Director General of ONS and the former National Statistician are no longer part of the organisation, their email accounts no longer exist, and thus we are not able to provide you with copies of their calendars.

The ONS Information Management Policy also restricts an individual's email account size, including their calendar, to a maximum of 125Mb. To keep within these limits, and for reasons of good housekeeping and records management, it is necessary to periodically delete calendar entries. Therefore, past calendar entries for the current Director General for ONS and National Statistician have been deleted, and a complete record for the whole period they have held their respective positions is not available. However, it is possible to provide a complete record of both their calendars for the period 4 January 2011 to 2 September 2011. An electronic, searchable record of each is attached. Paper copies of the calendars of the Director General for ONS and the National Statistician are not used.

Please note that under s40(2) of the Freedom Of Information Act, some personal appointments and information has been removed.

You have the right to have this response to your freedom of information request reviewed internally by an internal review process and, if you remain unhappy with the decision, by the Information Commissioner. If you would like to have the decision reviewed please write to Dennis Roberts, Office for National Statistics, Room 1214, Government Buildings, Cardiff Road, Newport, Gwent, NP10 8XG.

If you have any queries about this email, please contact me. Please remember to quote the reference number above in any future communications.

Yours sincerely
