Business case for suspension of recruitment to Archaeology and Heritage Studies at the University
of Worcester
Current position
Applications to single honours and joint honours in Archaeology and Heritage Studies are shown in
the following two tables with data available on the 24th April in each year so that it is possible to
compare current data with the previous years’ applications at the same point in the cycle.

Based on this data the likely recruitment into Archaeology and Heritage Studies would be similar to
last year if the COVID 19 pandemic has no effect on recruitment.
The numbers in the last three years studying Archaeology and Heritage Studies are as follows:

The final row shown in red shows a likely number of students in each level of the course based on an
optimistic projected of recruitment this year and typical progression rates. These numbers include
single and joint honours as well as FT and PT.
Proposal
The University has a policy of not running modules with less than 15 students. Most modules in
Archaeology and Heritage Studies are unique to the subject and are not shared with other degrees.
The likely student numbers in 2020-21 would result in all Archaeology and Heritage Studies modules
in levels 4 and 5 having less than 15 students. It is proposed that the University should therefore
suspend recruitment to both single honours and joint honours Archaeology and Heritage Studies.
It should be noted that A level Archaeology is no longer available, and this has reduced the number
of school leavers who are interested in the subject. Archaeology does attract some mature
applications, but this has been insufficient to maintain application numbers.
During the suspension of recruitment, the future of Archaeology and Heritage Studies should be
reviewed to determine what form of provision is viable at the University on an ongoing basis.

Interim Head of School, School of Science and the Environment.
