Dear Mr Blackburn
I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request in relation to diesel engines on our
801 Class trains.
For clarity your request was:
I would like to request a full list of all occasions since the 801 trains were introduced that an 801
has utilised its diesel engine. Please include the date and the unit number(s) involved and a very
brief description of what happened (for example an overhead power line failure etc) and the
locations and stations that the emergency diesel engine on the 801 was used between.
Unfortunately, the information you requested is not recorded. The engine on the 801’s is not
particularly small; it just has a limited fuel supply. It is not designed for emergency purposes only
and is often used to move units around depots where there is limited or no electrification.
We do not specifically record the times any engine is used, if the engine is used in an emergency it
would be incorporated into the overriding incident. It would be difficult to ascertain how often the
engines are used in an emergency and we do not collate that information as standard in the
Performance Team
