75,000 underpaid on conversion to ESA between 2011/12 and 2014/15

The request was successful.

Dear Department for Work and Pensions,

Please can you attach the Decision Making Guide, Flowchart and Policy and Guidance DWP staff are currently working to, and the Assessor Guide you are using , as from December 2016 when you began issuing correcting repayments to correct the mistake between 2011/12 and 2014/15, when processing the 75,000 claimants that were underpaid from 2011 on conversion to ESA.

The BBC reports "assessors wrongly calculated the income of around 75,000 claimants".
"errors affected people who applied for ESA between 2011/12 and 2014/15"
"problem discovered in December 2016 after the Office for National Statistics published fraud and error figures for the social security system."
"Mistakes in paying out benefits claims could cost up to £500m to put right"
"Mistakes began in 2011 when the government started moving benefits recipients onto ESA"
"The department, which says it discovered the mistakes last December, is understood to have contacted about 1,000 people so far."
"Ministers say that they are aware of the problem and that repayments have begun to be made." The full report from the bbc is at http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-42012116

Yours faithfully,

Anthony Collins
