Dear Mr Smith,
Thank you for your email, dated 08 April 2021, requesting the following information:
• Any email communication between the Ministry of Defence and the company Boston
Dynamics since 2004.
I am writing to confirm that Ministry of Defence (MOD) may hold information on some parts of your
request. However, I must advise you that we will not be able to answer your request without
exceeding the appropriate limit for FOI requests. This is because, the information you have
requested is not held centrally.
As such, to locate, retrieve and extract information in scope of your request would involve
contacting all teams across the MOD to check if they are aware of individuals who may have
emailed Boston Dynamics and if they hold such information. With over 200,000 personnel, both
civilian and military within the MOD, we estimate this would take about 50,000 hours of effort at a
cost of £1.25 million. Section 12 of the Act makes provision for public authorities to refuse
requests for information where the cost of dealing with them would exceed the appropriate limit,
which for central government is set at £600. This represents the estimated cost of one person
spending 3.5 working days in determining whether the department holds the information, and
locating, retrieving and extracting it.
Under Section 16 of the Act (Advice and Assistance), the MOD may be able to provide some
information in scope of your request if you were to reduce or refine it. For example, you may wish
to refine your request to focus on a certain area with the MOD. The MOD organisation chart can
be accessed at: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/mod-organisation-charts.
It may also
be helpful to know that the MOD has no record of any contracts with, or payments made to Boston
