Dear M. Hartree
Our ref: FOI2021/05047
Thank you for your email of 6 March in which you make a detailed request
under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000. Your full request is
attached.
The Freedom of Information Act provides the right to access to recorded
information. The Act does not require a public authority to create new
information in order to respond to a request, answer questions or provide
comments and views where no recorded information is already held.
We do not hold information for many of the items you have listed because no
allowances are available.
Recorded information for those items that we do hold is covered by section 21
of the Act (information accessible by other means).
It is in the public domain that the Prime Minister has use of an official residence
in Downing Street and at Chequers. Information on the allowance available for
the refurbishment and maintenance of the Downing Street residence is in the
public domain. We do not hold information for Chequers which is not covered
by the Freedom of Information Act.
The Ministerial Code covers in section 7
Ministers’ Private Interests (official
residences, and gifts and hospitality) and in section 10
Travel by ministers (use
of official cars). We do not hold information about the cost of the Prime
Minister’s car as this is provided by the Met Police.
The Ministerial Code is publicly available and can be found at:
Microsoft Word - August 2019 MINISTERIAL CODE - FINAL FORMATTED
2.docx (publishing.service.gov.uk)

Outside the requirements of the Act, I should explain that by being in receipt of
an official residence (at No.11 Downing Street), the Prime Minister does not
receive any Parliamentary Allowances for accommodation.
Similarly the cost of any food and groceries is met personally by the Prime
Minister.
Other information that we hold, such as any ministerial gifts (given and
received), hospitality and overseas travel, is also publicly available and can be
found at:
Cabinet Office: ministers' transparency publications - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
Expenses that MPs are allowed to claim are not a matter for us though
information is available on the Parliament website:
Pay and expenses for MPs - UK Parliament
Yours sincerely
NICHOLAS HOWARD
M. Hartree

What perks do the Prime Minister and his immediate family (his fiancée and
children if possible) receive, due to his status as PM and/or as an MP?
