Dear Zhu Tingke,
Your request was received on 17 June 2020 and I am dealing with it under the terms of the Freedom of
Information Act 2000 (‘the Act’).
You asked:
May I kindly request the admissions statistics of the MPhil Asian and Middle Eastern Studies
(Chinese Studies) and MPhil Asian and Middle Eastern Studies by Research (Chinese Studies)
courses:
1. Number of admissions, offers and intake per college for the past 5 admission cycle(broken
down by college, course and year) 2. Previous universities of applicants 3. Degrees and
subjects of applicants 4. Grades of successful applicants
1. This information is attached. Unlike undergraduate applicants, postgraduate applicants do not apply
to Colleges directly, though applicants can indicate their 1st and 2nd College preferences. Applicants
only get a College allocation when they have been made an offer and are at confirmation stage.
Therefore the attached list only provides confirmed students per College.
2-4. This information is attached, with the exception of the grades of each applicant. The University has
not supplied this because, coupled with the other information, it believes that individuals could be
identified as a result. In presenting the information in this way, the University is engaging the exemption
at section 40(3A)(a) of the Act because release in the precise format requested would breach the first
data protection principle (the fair, lawful and transparent processing of personal data) as set out in the
General Data Protection Regulation. This part of section 40 confers absolute exemption under the Act.
Please note that the attached document should not be copied, reproduced or used except in
accordance with the law of copyright.

within 40 working days of the date of this letter and reserves the right not to review a decision where
there has been undue delay in raising a complaint. If you are not content with the outcome of your
