Dear Mr Jarvis
Freedom of information request
Thank you for your email of 1 February 2020 requesting admissions statistics for law
programmes.
The University of Edinburgh is a global university, rooted in Scotland.  We are globally
recognised for our research, development and innovation and we have provided world-
class teaching to our students for more than 425 years.  We are the largest university in
Scotland and in 2018/19 our annual revenue was £1.1 bil ion, of which £286 mil ion was
research income.  We have over 43,000 students and almost 16,000 staff.  We are a
founding member of the UK’s Russell Group of leading research universities and a
member of the League of European Research Universities.
Equality, diversity and disability
The University is committed to providing inclusive education which meets the specific
needs of individual students.  The University welcomes applications from students with
disabilities, health conditions and specific learning difficulties, and aims to ensure that no
applicant is disadvantaged due to a disability or impairment.  Specific information and
guidance for disabled applicants is available on the University website.
Al  applicants to the University of Edinburgh are considered on the basis of their aptitude,
skil s and ability in relation to their proposed programme of study.  Information regarding
an applicant’s disability is not used in the academic decision making process.  It is used
constructively to ensure that we can make necessary adjustments in order that a
programme of study is accessible to the applicant.
Although we do not require applicants to provide information about any disability, health
condition or specific learning difficulty, we strongly recommend that they do so in their
application, to enable our Student Disability Service (SDS) to contact applicants to begin
to discuss any support requirements as soon as possible.  The numbers of disabled
students attending the University are available in the SDS factsheet on the website.
UNIVERSITY SECRETARY  Ms Sarah Smith
The University of Edinburgh is a charitable body, registered in Scotland, with registration number SC005336

To further the University’s Equality and Diversity Strategy, to meet the requirements of
the Scottish regulations under the Equality Act 2010 and the Public Sector Equalities
Duty, the University has set challenging equality outcomes, which are detailed in our
published Equality Outcomes Action Plan 2017-2021 and Equality Outcomes and
Mainstreaming Progress Reports.
Edinburgh Law School
For over 300 years the University of Edinburgh has trained generations of the finest legal
minds.  Edinburgh Law School is one of the leading law schools in the UK.  It has a long
and distinguished reputation, and continues to explore the cutting-edge of legal research.
It was ranked first in Scotland and fourth in the UK for breadth and quality of its research
in the most recent Research Excel ence Framework (REF).  Our law degrees are highly
respected, not just in Scotland but worldwide, and our alumni have enjoyed success
around the globe.  More information about the school is available on the Edinburgh Law
School website.
Admissions statistics
You asked for admissions statistics for all undergraduate and postgraduate programmes
run by the Law School in academic years 2014/15 to 2018/19, including the number of
applicants, unconditional offers and conditional offers.  You also asked for the number of
applicants who did not receive an offer.
In table 1 on the enclosure, I have provided statistics in relation to undergraduate
programmes.  In table 2, I have provided statistics in relation to postgraduate
programmes.
You also asked for admissions statistics relating to applicants who declared a disability
on their applications.  In table 3 on the enclosure, I have provided statistics relating to
applicants who declared a disability on their applications to undergraduate study, and in
table 4 I have provided statistics relating to applicants who declared a disability on their
applications to postgraduate study.
The figures in each table show applications rather than applicants; one applicant can
apply to more than one programme in the same admissions cycle.  The 2014/15 data
refers to the admissions cycle that concluded at the end of September 2014 for both
immediate entry in the 2014/15 academic year, as well as for deferred entry in the
2015/16 academic year.  This is the same for the following years.
You wil  see on tables 3 and 4 that I have not provided a breakdown for disability
statistics by programme.  This is because the numbers of applications and offers for
individual law programmes from applicants declaring a disability are often fewer than five.
Likewise, you wil  see on tables 1 and 2 that I have not provided exact numbers where
the number is fewer than five, or provided the numbers of applications to which an offer
was not received, as this would allow such low numbers to be calculated.  Disclosing
these low numbers could enable individuals to be identified.  This would breach the data
protection principles set out in data protection legislation.  The Freedom of Information
(Scotland) Act 2002 (FOISA) does not require us to provide this sort of information as it is
exempt under section 38(1)(b).

Please note that, under data protection law, information about health is considered to be
special category personal data.  This means that this information about individuals is
regarded as sensitive and therefore needs more protection.  The University is also
required to be ‘applicant blind’ when responding to requests under FOISA; that is to say
that it does not matter who makes the request, if we disclose information to one person
we are expected to disclose it to all.  While you may not be able to identify individuals
from the information you have requested, others, for example students and staff within
the Law School, may be able to do so.
Right to review
If you are dissatisfied with this response, you may ask the University to conduct a review
of this decision by contacting the University's Records Management Section in writing
(e.g. by letter or email) or in some other recorded form (e.g. audio or video tape).  You
should describe the original request, explain your grounds for dissatisfaction, and include
an address for correspondence.  You have 40 working days from receipt of this letter to
submit a review request.  The contact details for the Records Management Section are at
the top of this letter.  When the review process has been completed, if you are stil
dissatisfied, you may use the Scottish Information Commissioner’s guidance on making
an appeal to make an appeal to the Commissioner.  If you do not have access to the
Internet, please let me know and I wil  provide a copy of the relevant web pages.
Privacy notice for information request applicants
The University of Edinburgh's request privacy notice, which describes how we use the
information you have supplied about yourself and your request, is published on the
University website.
Yours sincerely
Rob Don
Information Compliance Officer
