Freedom of Information Request 101/11
I am writing to request data on the number of incidents which have occurred around 'death junction' in Roath.
This is a five-way junction between Crwys Road, Mackintosh Place, Albany Road, City Road, and Richmond
Road. I have pinpointed the location on a map here:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&ll=51.492713,-
3.170671&spn=0.005103,0.017316&z=16&msid=202342581220870354905.00049bea5cd54f61cc7f1
I would like to know the number of collisions which have occurred on this junction in the last five years.
Please could you break down this information by year - with details of the number of people involved, the
severity of the accident, how the accident occurred, if there were any injuries/deaths, and what modes of
transport were involved?
Please also place specifically where the accident happened (with the longitude and latitude if possible) - if this
could be represented in a map that would also be useful.
Data relating to road traffic collisions is recorded on 2 separate data basis and with differing levels of data available for
extraction by means of the search engine. One system records injury collisions and the other records damage only
collisions.
Whilst the data base for Injury collisions allows us to pin point the exact location of collisions, damage only collisions
are recorded under a Sector & Beat system which does not allow for the same method of mapping.
For this purposes we have produced 3 separate documents which should answer your request. These can be found
attached to our covering e-mail.
Document 1: Injury collisions using grid reference.pdf
Document 2: Map showing injury collisions.pdf
Document 3: Damage only collision data.pdf
Notes
Document 1 (Injury collisions using grid reference) contains data between 1st January 2006 and 31st December 2010 - this
data has been extracted by using a grid reference box around the location in question. There is one collision highlighted in
red on the sheet where the exact location details do not mirror the grid reference, which shows that it occurred on Albany
Road, near Plasnewydd Road. This just indicates how the inaccuracies in the grid reference can affect the data result.
Document 2 (Map showing injury collisions) displays the collisions provided in the above data with the exception of the
accident which was marked in red (because this does not mirror the grid reference).
Document 3 (Damage only collision data) contains data between 1st January 2006 and 31st December 2010 – damage only
collisions. This data has been obtained using the relevant sector and beat covering the area, but as you can see the exact
location field is so generic it is unclear where the actual collision occurred and whether it occurred at the location in
question.

Any ‘contributory factors’ mentioned within these statistics are only the opinion of the officer at the time of
the accident and are not necessarily what is/was finally deemed to be the cause of the collision.
The attached response will include the term ‘casualty’ this is not to be confused with ‘fatality’. A casualty, in
the context of Road Traffic Collisions is anyone with an injury as a result of the collision. The severity of the
casualty is further broken down to Slight/Serious/Fatal.
