Thanks Nigel
It may be that my brain is a bit addled, but does that guidance cover the situation where staff
need to get back to the House early (e.g to start at 0500 to relieve those who have been on all
night?). We can’t really use the contract in those circumstances so I think Ed’s authority was
that people could book a taxi in if there were no other reasonable routes, and we would
reimburse?

Hi,
You know me – I’m all for maximum flexibility anyway, never mind in circumstances such as
these (!)….
Linked are the pages and the doc that are still extant on the Intranet in respect of late night
transport. I’m happy to send these round to HOOs as a reminder of the policy/guidance in place
– OK?
Thanks.

Nigel, James,
As you may have gathered, tomorrow night is likely to be an all night sitting of the House.
Thursday may also be late. Departments providing front-line services have raised very sensible
points about taxis.
1.  will staff still get taxis home after 10.40pm if their shift has ended? – I understand that
the answer to this is yes.
2.  If staff need to come into work early in the morning (say 3am to start a shift as a
doorkeeper or in the PPO) will taxis be provided? I’ve spoken to Ed who agrees that staff
should be able to get a taxi and in these circumstances and seek reimbursement. I
understand that this has been permitted on previous occasions when the House has – or
been predicted to sit – late / early in this way and that this has been communicated to
Heads Of Office by HR. Would you be able to send this communication out tomorrow
morning? I will be around if you need to talk about this or get any further clarification.
Given the financial implications of (2), I’ve copied in Jonathan.
Best wishes
Private Secretary to the Clerk of the Parliaments.
