RESPONSE
British Transport Police, as a police force, handle a lot of CCTV in the course of law
enforcement investigations, however most of the physical infrastructure that obtains the
CCTV is neither managed nor owned by British Transport Police.
We have interpreted your request as referring to CCTV cameras in public areas that
would capture footage relevant to police investigations and not to the small number of
cameras actually owned by BTP and used for security purposes at our headquarters
building or custody suites.
Name(s) of person telephone number and email address of person responsible for
managing CCTV and the Data.
The Head of the CCTv Department would be contactable via
xxxxxxxxxxxxx@xxx.xxx.xxxxxx.xx or 0800 40 50 40.

Who is responsible for purchasing CCTV and Data Storage of CCTV. How many
cameras do you manage today? Is that growing?
British Transport Police do not purchase or manage railway CCTV systems, which would
be procured and operated by the relevant railway company or body.
How do you store and manage your video today? (Network Video Recorders?
Enterprise Storage?)
When video is captured or downloaded from railway operated systems for British
Transport Police to use, it is stored locally on disc prior to internal distribution to the
relevant officers or investigators.
Has your company ever lost video, or experienced poor-quality playback of video
files?
Quality of footage is often determined by age of equipment. British Transport Police are
able to play back files supplied by the railway industry in their original format. Once
supplied to British Transport Police, we operate a master and working copy system,
therefore the master copy is sealed and preserved.
How critical is video to your company? What is the impact of not being able to
access video or record video?
As with other police forces, video footage is a very important part of law enforcement
work.
When was the last time you refreshed your surveillance storage hardware?
British Transport Police does not have a centralised data storage system for CCTV.
Do you have an upgrade/refresh date? If so when? What is your budget for the
refresh?
Not applicable as above.
