Dear Ms Wilson,

Freedom of Information Request:  0847-10

Thank you for your request under the Freedom of Information Act which I received on 24th
September. In your request you asked :

“…to know the approximate earnings of the members of the board [of the
Government Hospitality Advisory Committee for the Purchase of Wine] and how
many hours per week they work to earn this money….

…[and]when this Committee was formed.”

I can confirm that Government Hospitality does hold the information you are requesting.
Your request has been forwarded to me as Head of Government Hospitality, the department
within the Foreign and Commonwealth Office responsible for the administration of the GH
Advisory Committee for the Purchase of Wine (GHACPW).

The Members and Chairman of the GHACPW are not paid.  They offer their advice to
Government Hospitality at no cost, although they are entitled to claim travel expenses to
attend meetings of the Committee.  The Committee meets only four times each year for half a
day. The four members of the Committee are all Masters of Wine, and the Chairman is a
retired diplomat, Sir David Wright.  I act as Secretary to the Committee. The Committee was
established in 1922, and has existed, in one form or another, since.

If you are unhappy with the service you have received in relation to your request and wish to
make a complaint or request a review of our decision, you should write to me.

If you are not content with the outcome your complaint, you may apply directly to the
Information Commissioner for a decision. Generally, the ICO cannot make a decision unless

you have exhausted the complaints procedure provided by the Foreign and Commonwealth
Office.

The Information Commissioner can be contacted at The Information Commissioner’s Office,
Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 5AF.

Yours sincerely,

Robert Alexander
