Dear John Slater,

Freedom of Information ref: 2018-IR186

Thank you for your request, received on 28 March 2018, for an internal review of your
Freedom of Information request 2018-784.

You asked:

“I am writing to request an internal review of Department for Work and Pensions's
handling of my FOI request 'Datasets & Type of Data Held for Various Benefits
About Claimants'.

The Department should have provided its response by 27 March 2018. Unless I receive a
response within the next 24 hours I will complain to the Commissioner.”

In your original request you asked:

“I know that the DWP publishes data on the https://stat-xplore.dwp.gov.uk website but
this request is not for actual data or just the type of data that maybe show on this
website.

RFI1 - What datasets does the DWP hold on its standard IT systems (i.e. excluding
bespoke datasets held by local offices) about claimants in respect of:
•

ESA
•
IB
•
PIP
•
DLA
•
JSA
•
Universal Credit

RFI2 – For the datasets from RFI1 what type of data is held? Please note I only want to
know the type of data held not the actual data.

For the avoidance of doubt a dataset is a collection of data. Most commonly a data set
corresponds to the contents of a single database table, or a single statistical data
matrix, where every column of the table represents a particular variable, and each row
corresponds to a given member of the data set in question.”

I am of a senior grade to the person who dealt with your request previously, and can confirm
that I have carried out an internal review. Your original request was received on 26 February
2018 and a reply was due by 26 March 2018, so we failed to respond in the statutory time limit
of 20 working days, and for this I apologise.

I can see that the response to 2018-784 was issued on 17 April 2018 and I understand you
have raised an internal review request following receipt of this response, reference 2018-
IR218, which is being handled separately to this internal review request, and you will receive a
response to that review in due course.

If you have any queries about this letter please contact us quoting the reference number
above.

Yours sincerely,

DWP Central FoI Team
