Dear Ms Stephens,

Unique Reference: FOI 6690
Thank you for your request for information dated 6 September 2017 and further to my email sent to
you on the 4 October 2017, apologising for the delay in responding to your request. You have
requested the following information:
Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, please provide me with the following
information:
1. The amount of money spent on asbestos management in schools between 2006 and
2016 (to include the costs of surveys, staff training and work to enclose asbestos within
schools)
2. The amount of money spent on asbestos removal from schools between 2006 and
2016
3. The amount of money spent on fines for breaches in the safe management of asbestos
in schools between 2006 and 2016
4. Funding sought from the Department of Education and the Education Funding Authority
for the management and removal of asbestos from schools between 2006 and 2016
5. The amount of funding approved by the Department of Education and the Education
Funding Authority for the management and removal of asbestos from schools between
2006 and 2016
6. The projected budget for future management of asbestos in schools between 2017 and
2027
The Council does not hold the information to 1, 2, 5 and 6 above.
In respect of 1, 2 and 5 the reason that this information in not available is that costs associated
with asbestos are not recorded separately.
In respect of question 6 the reason for this information not currently being available is that 50% of
all primary schools are due to be resurveyed in this financial year. Subject to funding being
available the remaining 50% of primary schools will be surveyed the following year and then a
decision will be taken as to whether a projected budget, is required and at what level, for the future
management of asbestos in schools between 2017 and 2027.
If you have not already done so, you may wish to write to the individual schools, as they may hold
the information you are seeking. A list of all Tameside schools can be found at:
www.tameside.gov.uk/schools
