3 year period for PAs/AAs to register
Dear General Medical Council,
Please confirm that following the start of GMC registration of PAs and AAS, scheduled for December 2024 (one year after the Order came into effect), there will be a further two year period during which PAs and AAs (and anyone who chooses to call themselves a PA or AA) can continue to work as a 'medical professional' without any registration or regulation, if they so choose.
Please advise whether any PA or AA referred to GMC for investigation will be given a two year grace period during which they will not be investigated. During this two year period, can they be 'struck off' or suffer any consequences, as would be the case from December 2026?
Yours faithfully,
Susan Sollazzi

Dear Ms Sollazzi
Your information request – IR1-4515515404
Thank you for your email dated 22 July 2024. I have considered your
request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA).
I have answered your queries as below:
1. Please confirm that following the start of GMC registration of PAs and
AAS, scheduled for December 2024 (one year after the Order came into
effect), there will be a further two year period during which PAs and
AAs (and anyone who chooses to call themselves a PA or AA) can
continue to work as a 'medical professional' without any registration
or regulation, if they so choose.
There will be a two year transition period as set out in the [1]relevant
legislation to allow PAs and AAs to keep working whilst they complete any
necessary steps for registration, and to enable us to process
applications.
2. Please advise whether any PA or AA referred to GMC for investigation
will be given a two year grace period during which they will not be
investigated. During this two year period, can they be 'struck off' or
suffer any consequences, as would be the case from December 2026?
We can only take action once a PA or AA is registered with us, however,
historic fitness to practise issues will be within our regulatory scope.
We will also ask individuals applying for registration with us to complete
and sign a fitness to practise declaration which covers any ongoing or
previous concerns about performance, professionalism or behaviour.
Who to contact
If you would like to appeal my response, please set out your reasons in
writing to [2][GMC request email]. Please note that we will only usually
consider appeals received within 40 working days of our response. You can
also appeal to the [3]Information Commissioner, the regulator of the FOIA
and DPA.
