Dear Ms Edmunds
Re: Tuberculosis in Midlands prisons
Thank you for your email of 1 June 2015 in which you asked for information relating
to Tuberculosis (TB) rates in prisons. Your email has been handled as a request for
information under the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act. In accordance with Section
1(1)(a) of the FOI Act, I can confirm that Public Health England (PHE) holds some of
the information requested.
Specifically, you asked for data on the number of reported cases of TB in each
prison in Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire for each year
from 2009 to 2014. Please note that data is unable to be broken down by individual
institution due to the small numbers of people involved. PHE’s data disclosure policy
requires that where there are small numbers of cases involved the requested
information be suppressed to protect against the deductive disclosure of personal
health information of individuals. However, PHE is able to provide data at a regional
level for the years 2009-2014 in the table below:
TB reports made to the Public Health Intelligence in Prisons and Secure Settings
Service, PHE 2007-2014
In accordance with our Section 16 duty to provide advice and assistance, please
note that a copy of the annual Health and Justice report for 2014 is available from: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/public-health-in-prisons.
A PDF copy of
this report has also been attached for your convenience. This annual report,
published on 15 June 2015, provides national data for England from 2007 onwards
and includes a section specifically on TB (section 3.10).
If you have any queries regarding the information that has been supplied to you,
please refer your query to me in writing in the first instance. If you remain dissatisfied
and would like to request an internal review, then please contact us at the address
above or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Please note that you have the right to an independent review by the Information
Commissioner’s Office if a complaint cannot be resolved through the PHE
complaints procedure. The Information Commissioner’s Office can be contacted by
writing to Information Commissioner’s Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow,
Cheshire SK9 5AF.
