Freedom of Information Request F2015-184
Thank you for your Freedom of Information request dated 1 = May 2015 in which you asked for the following information:
“In your department:<= o:p>
How many computers are still
running Windows XP?
When
do you anticipate you will transition all of these XP machines to a new
operating system? Which opera=
ting
system are you switching these machines to?
What
parts of the department are these machines mainly used in?
How
are you securing the XP machines in the interim period before their operati=
ng
system is replaced?
Have
you taken out an Extended Support deal with Microsoft to update these XP
machines?
What
is the cost of this Extended Support deal?
When
does this Extended Support deal expire?”
DFID= holds information relevant to your request. We are, however, withholding this under Section 31 (1) (a) (Law Enforcement) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
Section 31 (1) (a) (Law Enforcement)<= /b>
Sect= ion 31 (1) (a) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, provides that information is exempt if its disclosure under the Act would, or would be likely to prejudi= ce the prevention and detection of crime.
In a= pplying this exemption we have had to balance the public interest in withholding the information against the public interest in disclosing it.
Factors in favour of disclosure include the significant public interest in openness and transparency particularly as regards the prevention of crime as this maintains confidence in law enforcement. There is a very strong public inte= rest in ensuring that robust systems are in place to prevent and detect unlawful= ness or impropriety.
Fact=
ors
against disclosure include the strong public interest in ensuring that
disclosure of information does not expose DFID to any attempt to attack our=
IT
systems, which is a criminal offence.
There is a very strong public interest in ensuring that Government is
able to ensure maximum information security. Providing information relating to =
the
specific operating systems of the IT equipment used in DFID could weaken our
ability to protect the sensitive information with which we are entrusted. This would be contrary to the publ=
ic
interest. There is also a
significant risk that prejudice would occur as a result of the disclosure of
the information requested, which could be valuable intelligence to perpetra=
tors
of crime.
We h= ave, therefore, decided that in this case the public interest in withholding the information outweighs the public interest in providing it.
