Dear Mr. Turner

Freedom of Information Act 2000 – RFI20141988

Thank you for your request under the Freedom of Information Act (‘the Act’) of 7th December
2014 seeking the following information:

“1/can you tell me how many people are employed at the bbc relateing to the weather reading
2/ can you tell me how many weather presenters are on maternity leave on full pay”

The number of staff currently employed by the BBC for Nations, Regions and Network coverage
is approximately 35.  However, this figure does not include part time, freelancers or those staff
who are covering other areas (e.g. news) but occasionally also cover weather.

We are withholding information regarding the number of presenters on maternity leave on full pay
under section 40(2) (personal information) of the Act. Under section 40(2) of the Act, personal
information about identifiable living individuals is exempt if disclosure to a third party would
breach one or more principles in the Data Protection Act 1998. The individuals concerned would
not expect their personal data to be disclosed to a third party. To do so would be unfair;
therefore, disclosure would breach the First Data Protection Principle (fair and lawful processing).
