Dear Paul Yates,
Freedom of Information request reference: VTR 3964

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request received on 13 September 2014.

You asked:

1) Could you please provide me with the total number of claimants who are in the ESA
Support Group that have attended a work-focused interview at their local Jobcentre in
2013/2014?

No central record is kept of this information. We estimate that the cost of complying
with this request would exceed the appropriate limit of £600. The appropriate limit has
been specified in regulations and for central Government is set at £600. This
represents the estimated cost of one person spending 3.5 working days in determining
whether the Department holds the information. Under Section 12 of the Freedom of
Information Act the department is not obliged to comply with your request and we will
not be processing your request further.

2) Is it mandatory for claimants in the ESA Support Group to attend a work-focused
interview when requested to do so by their local Jobcentre?

It is not mandatory for claimants in the Support Group to attend a WFI when requested
to do so by their local Job Centre. All engagement for claimants in the Support Group is
voluntary.

3) How many claimants in the ESA Support Group have had their benefits sanctioned
for refusing to attend a work-focused interview at their local Jobcentre in 2013/2014

It is not mandatory for claimants in the Support Group to attend a WFI when requested
to do so by their local Job Centre. All engagement for claimants in the Support Group is
voluntary.

There is no such information held on the number of sanctions applied to those in the
Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) Support Group as they are not subject to
Work Focused Interviews, therefore cannot be sanctioned for refusing to attend one.
Only ESA claimants in the Work Related Activity Group are subject to sanctions when
failing to comply with the conditions.

You may be interested to know that the Department does publish statistics on both
Jobseekers Allowance and other ESA sanctions via Stat-Xplore and more information
can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/jobseekers-allowance-
sanctions
