Information Compliance Manager, School of Oriental and African Studies

FOI2021/105

Dear Amalia Haynen,

Thank you for your Freedom of Information Act request of 22 May 2021. I
have reproduced your questions below together with SOAS’s response.

I would like to request the following data under the Freedom of
Information Act about the single honours undergraduate law course at your
university for each of the following admissions cycles:

2018/2019
2019/2020

(please provide the data separately for each cycle)

The data I am requesting is:

(a) The total number of applications received for the course

(b) The total number of offers made for the course

(c) The total number of students who accepted the course as their firm
choice on UCAS

(d) The total number of students who enrolled on the course in
September/October after the cycle ended

(e) The average number of A* grades, A grades, B grades, C grades and D
grades at A-level held by applicants studying A-levels (whether these were
predicted or achieved)

(f) The average number of A* grades, A grades, B grades, C grades and D
grades at A-level held by offer holders studying A-levels (whether these
were predicted or achieved)

(g) The average LNAT multiple choice grade achieved by applicants

(h) The average LNAT multiple choice grade achieved by offer holders

Our response

(a) 2019 = 630; 2020 = 670

(b) 2019 = 470; 2020 = 590

(c) 2019 = 190; 2020 = 130

(g) 2019 = 19. Data for 2020 is withheld because the number of applicants
was so few, the calculated average may lead to the identification of
individuals’ scores. LNAT exams were cancelled mid-cycle in 2020, which
caused the low number of exam candidates.

(h) 2019 = 24. Data for 2020 is withheld because the number of offer
holders was so few, the calculated average may lead to the identification
of individuals’ scores. The low numbers were caused by the cancellation of
LNAT exams mid-cycle.

Data sources:

For a), b), c), g) and h): Applicant data extracted from the student
record system Unit-E by SOAS’ Admissions team

For d), e), f): Applicant and qualification data extracted from the
student record system Unit-E by SOAS’ Planning team

Rounding strategy

The data is rounded using the same rounding methodology that is used by
the Higher

Education Statistics Agency (HESA). Their strategy is summarised below:

Due to the provisions of the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK
GDPR) and the Human

Rights Act 1998, HESA implements a strategy in published and released
tabulations

designed to prevent the disclosure of personal information about any
individual. There are

three aspects to the rounding methodology:

·       Counts of people are rounded to the nearest multiple of 5.

·       Percentages (like % of students who are disabled) are not
published if they are

fractions of a small group of people (fewer than 22.5). This includes
percentage change calculations ([New-Old]/Old) where either the old or new
number is less than 22.5.

·       Averages (like average age or average salary) are not published if
they are averages

of a small group of people (7 or fewer).

Note that Totals are rounded separately, so the total will not always
equal the sum of the

row/column it represents. Percentages are not rounded.
