2017 Firearms surrender

Response to this request is long overdue. By law, under all circumstances, Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) should have responded by now (details). You can complain by requesting an internal review.

You have widely advertised during November 2017 that '350 firearms have been voluntarily surrendered'. Many of those in photographs are either deactivated or obsolete-calibre antiques or air guns.

How many of the 350 surrendered 'weapons' are viable section 1 firearms?

The MPS have not contacted me with any reasons why this response should be delayed, or requesting a little more time. I regret I must therefore move this forward to a formal request for internal review.

Perhaps for clarification I should make clear that by 'viable section 1 firearms' I mean firearms usable without repair or modification in the state in which they were surrendered, whether or not the appropriate ammunition was also surrendered with the firearm.

Further to our earlier correspondence dated 15/01/2019, I am now able to
provide a response to your complaint concerning Freedom of Information Act
(FOIA) request reference number: 2017110001151.  

Section 10(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 states:

'Subject to subsections (2) and (3), a public authority must comply with
section 1(1) promptly and in any event not later than the twentieth
working day following the date of receipt.'

In the circumstances of your request, neither the information requested
nor a refusal notice was provided to you within 20 working days.
Therefore, the MPS have not complied with the requirements of section 10
of the Act.

I have made enquiries with the Information Manager (IM) with
responsibility for your request. Enquiries are ongoing with respect to
your request for information. The IM's Line Manager is now aware of the
delay and the matter has been escalated up to them in order to progress
your request as a matter of urgency. I have asked the IM to complete your
request as a matter of urgency.

As a response to your request is currently outstanding, I am unable to
complete a full internal review in relation to your request. However,
should you be dissatisfied with the MPS response to your request, you may
request an internal review in relation to the decision.

I would like to take this opportunity to apologise on behalf of the MPS
for any inconvenience caused by the time taken to respond to your Freedom
of Information Act request. The progress of your request will continue to
be monitored and the issues you have raised have been recorded, enabling

SEARCHES TO LOCATE INFORMATION

To locate the information relevant to your request searches were conducted
within the MPS.

The searches failed to locate any information relevant to your request,
therefore, the information you have requested is not held by the MPS.

The results of the analysis of the guns were not known at the time of
receiving this request, as they had not all been collected.  The results
of the analysis is still not known, but we will be updated.
