2017 calls to the police with regards to drones near schools

I Hudson made this Freedom of Information request to South Yorkshire Police

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was successful.

Dear South Yorkshire Police,

It's been reported in the media that SY Police had "5 calls relating to drones being flown near schools or in the vicinity of children" there's not enough information from this to determine if there was any potential wrong doing or not, for example school playing fields can be used on evenings and weekends for drone flying which is completely innocent and harmless.

Could you detail the incident logs (with of course redacted text as necessary) of these 5 logs, also would it be possible to have the date and time to determine if these drone flights occured whilst children and teachers were there or if these were simply events outside school hours.

Something similar to the West Yorkshire Police format would be ideal: https://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/site...

Yours faithfully,

I Hudson

Please could you clarify the following point(s): -

I initially approached the administrator for South Yorkshire Police’s
Incident Management System for the relevant incident logs you refer to in
your FOI request.

This system records the majority of matters requiring the specific
deployment of police resources, whether reported by members of the public
or ‘happened upon’ by officers and staff in the course of their duties.
Incidents such as these would be recorded among the 1000’s of daily calls
and incidents.

He has said he would need more details as to the area/district  where
these incidents took place to locate those specific to drones and schools.

I then approached our Media Team to see if they had done any  press
releases concerning this subject with which I could provide him with more
information for his search.  Unfortunately after checking their system
they cannot find anything that correlates  to us giving info about the use
of drones near schools or saying how many incidents we’ve had.  There are
no requests logged with them either for the information.

Therefore could you please supply further details of the
area/district/dates, from the items you saw in the media.  Even by what
media source may be helpful for the search.

As you appreciate 1000’s of incidents are created everyday on  the system
and with limited search fields or generic titles any info you can supply
would be helpful

Please forward your clarification to South Yorkshire Police as this
request will be ‘stopped’ on our database until this has been received.

Once we have received clarification, your request be considered and you
will receive a response within the statutory timescale of 20 working days
as defined by the Act, subject to the information not being exempt or
containing a reference to a third party. In some circumstances South
Yorkshire Police may be unable to achieve this deadline. If this is likely
you will be informed and given a revised time-scale at the earliest
opportunity.

There may be a fee payable for the retrieval, collation and provision of
the information you request. If this is the case you will be informed and
the 20 working day timescale will be suspended until we receive payment
from you. If you choose not to make a payment then your request will
remain unanswered.

Some requests may also require either full or partial transference to
another public authority in order to answer your query in the fullest
possible way. Again, you will be informed if this is the case.

Yours sincerely

Dear Louise,

Here is the blog which has been reported in newspapers throughout the UK and specifically cites data that SY Yorks police had provided to a Dr Alan McKenna:

https://alanmacblog.wordpress.com/

See "Other categories of calls that South Yorkshire Police received included 15 in respect to the theft of drones; 5 relating to drones being flown near schools or in the vicinity of children; "

West Yorkshire police for the sake of FOIs on drones run the following query on the incident log text:

Search terms %UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLE%, and/or %DRONE% contained within the incident log text.

Running the query above with the word school added within the 2017 incidents should hopefully find the 5 calls referenced.

Yours faithfully
