Dear John

I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request dated 13
December 2017 in which you requested information regarding admissions to
Cardiff University dental school.

For ease of reference, I have reproduced your questions below and set out
our corresponding responses.

I would like to make a request for the  2016 and 2017 entry cycle for
dentistry admissions ( course UCAS code: A200)

(1)   Please can you provide a copy of the interview form that is used in
the MMIs for the dentistry course to assess candidates specific to each of
the ten stations.  This request is applicable to 2016 and 2017 entry. I
would kindly like to request a copy of the form used in each of the MMI
stations, but on separate documents for each year if possible.

Please see attached at Appendix 1 the scoring sheet which was used at each
station for the 2016/17 and 2017/18 entry interviews.

(2)Please can you provide a list of what is being assessed at each station

The questions, and stations, have been developed to establish the
applicant’s competence and suitability and are marked on the basis of
Awareness / Ability in the Topic covered by the station and overall
Suitability for Profession.  Further information can be found on our
website:
[1]http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/study/undergrad....

(3) Please can you provide the total scores given at each station

Please see attached at Appendix 1 the scoring sheet which is used at each
station.

(4) Please can you provide the statistics for:

(i) How many students applied for the A200 Dentistry 5 year course?

(ii) How many were offered an interview

(iii) How many were given an offer

(iv) Total course intake

(v) If offered a place, what their interview score was for each station

(vi) The number of applicant per place

Please can you include this data on 3 separate documents for the 2015,
2016 and 2017 entry cycles (i.e for your latest three UCAS cycles)

In relation to questions (i), (ii), (iii), (iv) and (vi) please see
Appendix 2.

In relation to questions (v), please see Appendix 3.  Please note, the
information is not held in entry cycles but by the Academic Year the MMIs
were carried out.  The stations are different each year, and not
necessarily comparable across years e.g. station 3 could be station 7 the
following year or a totally different station all together.  The
weightings relating to different stations also varies year on year.

(5) Please can you provide samples of questions that can be asked at each
station

The University considers that providing samples of questions, which form
part of a current University application process, is exempt from
disclosure in light of Section 43(2) of the Freedom of Information Act.
In order to apply the exemption under Section 43(2) it is required that a
public interest test be carried out.  This is considered as follows:

Factors in favour of disclosure

It is in the public interest that information is disclosed by public
authorities that enables transparency.

Factors in favour of non-disclosure

It is not in the public interest to disclose information that would have
the effect of distorting the application process by making available
material that is a key element of the University’s method of assessing
students’ competence and suitability for the course and which would
prejudice its competitive position and undermine the application process
if disclosed.

(6) I would also like to know what the selection process is when
determining a candidates suitability for the five year A200 course. If any
form is used to assess this, I would also like a copy of this.

Please find further information on the selection process on our website:
[2]http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/study/undergrad...

(7)        Total course intake for 2018 entry

The intake for 2018/19 will be 74.

(8)        Estimate of the applicants per place for 2018 entry

(9)        Estimate of the number of offers that will be given for 2018
entry

In relation to questions 8 and 9 we do not record estimates.

I trust this information satisfies your enquiry.  The University has a
Freedom of Information Complaints Procedure should you feel dissatisfied
with this response or the way in which your request was handled.
