Dear Kai,

Thank you for your request for information received by The University of
Manchester on 15 March 2019 which was as follows:

Please kindly provide data for 2016/2017, 2017/2018 and 2018/2019
admission cycles separately, for each of them.

1. List of all postgraduate taught courses for 2016/2017,2017/2018,
2018/2019

2. Number of applicants

3. Number of interviews ( if applicable)

4. Number of offers made

5. Number of Chinese applications and offers made (Business Programs,
Mathematics Programs, separately)

6. Percentage of international applicants interviewed that were made an
offer (Business Programs , Mathematics Programs, separately)

7. Percentage of Chinese applicants interviewed and were made an offer
(Business Programs, Mathematics Programs, separately)

8. Offer holders' bachelor degree main subject area (Business Programs,
Mathematics Programs, separately)

9. Offer holders' bachelor degree average academic performance(Business
Programs, Mathematics Programs, separately)

10.Offer holders' minimum entry grades in terms of academic performance
(Business Programs, Mathematics Programs, separately)

11. Offer holders' universities attended for bachelor degree (Business
Programs, Mathematics Programs, separately)

The University has now considered your request and unfortunately the
information you are seeking cannot be provided at this time. This is
because in relation to questions 8, 9, 10 and 11, there is no central
record of this information from which a response could be automatically
extracted. As such, we would need to manually assess each student’s
individual transcript to collate this information. Due to the very large
number of students this would involve (for example there were just under
9000 postgraduate taught students in total in 2016/17), it is not possible
to conduct this exercise within the 18 hour ‘Appropriate Limit’ (as
defined in the Freedom of Information and Data Protection (Appropriate
Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004). As a result, Section 12 of the Freedom
of Information Act 2000 applies and regrettably this task cannot be
undertaken at this stage. This email serves to act as a refusal notice for
this request, as per Section 17 (5) of the Act.

Section 16 of the Freedom of Information Act imparts a duty on public
authorities to advise applicants to help them bring their request within
the 18 hour limit. As such, I can advise that were you to limit your
request to just questions 1, 2, 4 and 5 it is likely we would be able to
answer these within the limit. If that information would be of use to you,
we would be happy to consider a revised request on that basis, if you wish
to submit one.

If you feel that The University of Manchester has refused access to
information to which you are entitled, or has not dealt with your request
appropriately under the FOIA, you have a right of appeal.

An appeal in the first instance should be directed to the Information
Governance Office at [1][email address]. You should include:

·         details of your initial request

·         any other relevant information

The University will deal with your appeal within a reasonable time, and
will inform you of the projected time scale on receipt of your complaint.
You are also welcome to contact the Information Governance Office with
informal questions about the handling of your request.

After The University’s internal appeals procedure has been exhausted, you
have a further right of appeal to the Information Commissioner’s
Office. Details of this procedure can be found at [2]www.ico.org.uk.

Kind regards

Sharon

Dear MTRS FOIA,
Thanks for your reply. I might not clarify it clearly in my previous request. According to my request 4 for "Number of Chinese applications ( China pr domiciled) and offers made (Business Programs, Mathematics Programmes, separately)", I would like you to provide the data in terms of a breakdown of all Business Programs ('Group N Business and Admin studies') and Mathematics Programmes ('Group G Mathematical Sciences'). If possible, could you please provide this information for 2016-2017, 2017-2018, 2018-2019?

Yours sincerely,

KAI CHEN

MTRS FOIA, University of Manchester

Dear Kai Chen,

Thank you for your email.

In your last request you asked for the “Number of Chinese applications (
China pr domiciled) and offers made  (Business Programs, Mathematics
Programs, separately” which we provided a response to.

You are now requesting the following:

The “numbers of Chinese applications (China pr domiciled) and offers made”
broken down by “all Business Programs ('Group N Business and Admin
studies') and  Mathematics Programmes ('Group G Mathematical Sciences').
If possible, could you please provide this information for 2016-2017,
2017-2018, 2018-2019?”

We are treating this as a new request which has been logged as per the
subject line.

The University will respond to your request within 20 working days.

With best regards

Lisa
