Donated by you.
Our Annual Fund
At the end of the fifth year of fundraising, Kingston University’s Annual Fund has
almost reached the half a million pound mark, with the last academic year alone
raising over £116,000.
All this is made possible by you, our alumni. Your donations make huge differences
to the lives of our students, who in turn go out into the world, representing and
enhancing the reputation of our amazing University.
A big thank you to you all!

Rick Willemse
BSc Geology 2012 and recipient of a Whitten Fund grant
Donations to the Whitten Fund support
geoscience students with the often-
considerable costs of final-year mandatory
fieldwork. BSc Geology student Rick
Willemse used his award to part-fund a
trip to Iceland to investigate the effects of
volcanic ash on the degradation of airframe
materials. Rick said: “With my degree coming
towards its conclusion and my bank account
edging nervously towards the red, the award
allowed me to breathe more easily and end
my studies with a flourish. The trip to Iceland
was invaluable, and collecting samples from volcanic rock was both thrilling and
so important to the practical aspects of my dissertation. And I had the extra thrill
of meeting a man who was actually called Thor, halfway up a glacier.”

Francesca Jones
Former Postgraduate Scholarship Winner
MA Publishing and Creative Writing 2011
Since completing her studies, Francesca
has undertaken vital internships that have
quickly led to her first full-time position as an
editorial assistant within the City & Guilds’
publishing department. Already exceeding
expectations and winning the organisation’s
Big Roar award, she would like to pass on
her heartfelt thanks to the alumni of Kingston
University who helped her to fully focus on
her studies. “Donations to the Annual Fund
made it possible for me to really throw myself
into my studies and to excel,” Francesca
said. “Without the huge financial burden of paying all of my fees, I also found the
time to edit one of the University’s creative writing publications, which was crucial
in helping me into my current position. This is why I am so tremendously thankful
to Kingston alumni and the extraordinary help that they have given me.”

Who’s Donating?
Jessica Horscroft
English MPhil 1999
Jessica studied for both a BA and an MPhil
in English Literature at Kingston and was
proud to give something back to the University
through the Annual Fund. Talking about her
time at Kingston and what caused her to
donate, Jessica said: “I suddenly went blind
at the age of 29 and really needed something
to give me my self-confidence back. Kingston
did exactly that, giving me a real feeling of self-
worth. It even gave me the confidence to take
up singing again – something that I had done
professionally before I lost my sight. I donate
because I love the thought that other people, young or old, could be empowered
by the kind of experiences and opportunities that my time at Kingston gave me.”

John Henshall
Postgraduate scholar 2012
John Henshall couldn’t believe he’d won
a postgraduate scholarship when the call
came through. “I was at home with my dad,
preparing for the move to uni and I almost
missed the call,” he said. “When I heard I’d won
it, I couldn’t believe it – I ran into the kitchen
screaming! It feels amazing.” John, who is
studying geographical information systems (GIS),
explained that he had been so worried about
financing his studies, he almost didn’t take up
his place. The scholarship means he will now be
able to focus completely on his course, and take
part in valuable extra-curricular activities such as the field trip to Malta. “I’d like to say
thank you to the donors – your generosity means so much to me.”
John is keen to use the expert knowledge he gains at Kingston to develop the
relatively young discipline of GIS further. His experiences of teaching English in Taiwan
after graduating from his first degree have also had a lasting effect on him. “I’d like to
be involved in educating children about GIS – everyone uses it in things like Google
maps, but people don’t know about the science behind it,” he said.

Elizabeth Batty
Postgraduate scholar 2012
Liz Batty, who is studying a masters in
Historic Building Conservation, knows more
than most how valuable a scholarship is. “I
started the masters last year and had to stop
because I couldn’t continue to fund it, so it’s
a big relief to know that I had that weight off
my mind,” Liz said. “It means I can actually
do the course. Otherwise I simply wouldn’t
be able to do it,” she explained.
Liz is combining her part-time studies with
working for the Church of England, looking
after churches in the Winchester diocese, and hopes that, together with her
masters, the first part of her RICS accreditation, she can then go on to do
the second part of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors Assessment of
Professional Competence and become a chartered surveyor. “I’d like to further
my career and publish within the field,” Liz said. “I’ve got my heart set on working
on Winchester Cathedral, or any significant historical building would be good!
I want to become a specialist in the field, so I need more specialist knowledge
than my undergraduate degree to do that.”
The generosity of the donors has inspired Liz to donate in the future. “I think it’s
a really nice thing that, if someone has succeeded, they give something back to
people at the beginning of their career, and you hope that you can end up doing
the same thing, especially if you have personally benefitted from someone else
donating money. You really think, if I do make it, it’s thanks to them,” she said.

Joanna Suchy
Postgraduate scholar 2012
For Joanna Suchy, who is studying a psychology
conversion masters at Kingston, receiving the
postgraduate scholarship means being able to
follow her dream of becoming an educational
psychologist, helping children and young people
to improve their lives. “Because I want to go
into educational psychology, I need quite a lot of
experience, like mentoring and working with children
and young people, so the scholarship means that I
can do voluntary work as well, rather than having to
make sure I get paid work,” Joanna explains.
Joanna is so grateful to the donors who made it all possible, and she’s determined to
ensure that their money doesn’t go to waste. “I know they’re taking a bit of a gamble on
me, but I’m definitely going to make sure it pays off, because I want to do well for myself
as well as for them,” said Joanna. “Nothing is going to stop me!”

Student Hardship Fund
What’s the use of half a degree?
We can never be sure what’s around the corner. That’s why
we have the Student Hardship Fund, helping students who
have encountered unforeseen financial difficulties complete
their education. In the last academic year this fund has helped
47 students finish their degree. For instance, one of our
students was left homeless after a relationship breakdown.
Left with absolutely no money to pay for her place in student
halls, we stepped in and saved the day. Likewise, a student
who suddenly lost his father, halfway through his degree,
needed our help to keep a roof over his head. He went on to
finish his degree and is now a full-time teacher.

Diana Crosbie
Postgraduate scholar 2012
Although Diana Crosbie was wondering how
she was going to fund her masters, she was
determined to find a way, even if it meant life
was going to be a struggle. So, when she
discovered that she’d won the scholarship, it
was a massive relief.
“I did somersaults when I received the call;
I was just jumping around,” said Diana,
who had to try and explain her jubilance to
her 6-year-old daughter. “I was absolutely
delighted,” she added. And it didn’t stop
there. When Diana shared her news with her parents, they were thrilled too.
“They were more impressed with that than when I got my degree!” she explained.
Diana hopes to become a clinical psychologist and is particularly interested in
working with people with substance abuse and dependency problems. “I’m
volunteering in a rehab clinic at the moment, so getting that hands-on experience
is really important alongside my Clinical Applications of Psychology masters,”
said Diana. “Getting the scholarship gives me the opportunity to carry on with my
volunteer work. Everything seems to be coming together at the moment.”
Diana is so grateful to the donors for enabling her to pursue her dream. “They’re
definitely giving someone an opportunity to make something of themselves, and
really give something back as well.
It’s amazing!” Diana said.

discover this giant
leap for Kingston
The Opportunities Fund
Robots on the Moon
With the help of the Opportunities Fund, Kingston
students have been able to enter one of the world’s most
prestigious competitions, the Nasa Lunabotics Mining
Competition. Tasked with the design and manufacture
of a robot which could actually end up making mining
expeditions to the moon, this will involve our students
exercising various skills at the highest level (quite literally),
such as advanced mechanics, electrical engineering,
programming, mathematics and astronautics. As well as
developing practical skills, the competition is inspiring
students from across all fields of engineering.
Mark Olgobo, who took part while working on his masters in Mechatronics said: “Without the
help of the Opportunities Fund to obtain sensors and materials, this project would have never
‘taken off’.”

Firat Elbeyioglu
Postgraduate scholar 2012
For Firat Elbeyioglu, winning the postgraduate
scholarship will not only change his life, but
could also save the lives of others.
With an undergraduate degree in biochemistry
from Kingston, Firat is now venturing on the
next step of his dream to eradicate the world
of the parasite Schistisoma mansoni, which
is transmitted through dirty water, affecting
people in third-world countries. As a masters-
by-research student, Firat will be trying to find
out how the parasite matures in the human
body. “I’m interested in infectious diseases. Viruses and parasites have a lot in
common: they need the host to survive, but these areas are so weak in research.
Without it, we’re never going to cure anything, so you need to get that knowledge
first and then identify where you’re going to act, and then act; and then hopefully
treat,” explains Firat.
After he completes his masters, Firat is hoping to be able to put his research into
practice by doing a medical degree. “It depends on what opportunities arise, but
ultimately it’s about doing the research and then, hopefully, one day putting it into
practice. Maybe one day you’ll hear my name!”
Firat believes he couldn’t achieve all this without the scholarship. “This scholarship
allows us to fulfil our potential, which may open more doors in the future,” adds Firat.

How we raise money
Melanie Kydd
Student fundraiser
As many of you know, one of the ways
in which we raise money – over half a
million pounds so far – is by getting current
Kingston students to telephone you. Of
course, it’s not just about the fundraising; it’s
also a fantastic opportunity for our students
to chat to those who have travelled the
road that they are now undertaking. One
such student, Melanie Kydd from Australia,
certainly found it a rewarding experience.
“It was such a pleasure and a confidence
boost to talk to people who have been at Kingston before me. They were full of
amazing advice and so friendly. Not only did I learn so much about the University,
but I also managed to raise much more money than I thought I would. It gave me
such a buzz to feel that I was helping in this way and making a big difference to
people’s education.”
