Dear Ms Harriot

Our ref:  FOI-1512-1314

Thank you for your email received on 15 November 2013 asking for information about collisions between cyclists and HGVs in London.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

Please see the attached tables.

The first attachment, ‘Collision Data’ shows the number of collisions since 2008 which resulted in injury to a cyclist and involved either an HGV or a bus/coach.

The second attachment provides a breakdown of the collisions by the ethnicity of the HGV or bus/coach drivers involved.

Please note that some of the totals on these two tables do not tally. This is because some of the collisions involved a cyclist and more than one bus or coach (and possibly other vehicles too, though they have not been included).  We are unable to identify which vehicle actually hit the cyclist without manually going through data on each of the collisions, and therefore we have provided the ethnicity of all HGV or bus/coach drivers involved.

It is important to note that the data provided shows collisions where a cyclist was injured and an HGV or bus/coach was also involved. It does not necessarily show that there was a direct conflict between the cyclist and the HGV/bus/coach. The DfT recording category used is ‘Bus / Coach’ and the figures shown therefore do not indicate that the collision involved a bus operating TfL services.

This data covers ALL collisions including minor collisions where the cyclist did not require hospital treatment.  We require bus drivers to report all incidents no matter how minor they are.

Information is provided for 2013 up to 31July. 2013 information is provisional and may be subject to change.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely

Subject: Freedom of Information request - Collisions between cyclists and HGVs in London

Dear Transport for London,

Please could you provide me with a breakdown of the number of collisions between cyclists and bus drivers in London between 2008 to date. I would also like the same data for collisions between cyclists and HGVs in London. Please could you provide the ethnic origin of each bus and HGV driver involved in each collision for this period – 2008 to 2013. I do not need the names, sex etc of the drivers; just their ethnic origin please.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Jane Harriot
