RE: Your Information Request
Thank you for your requests for information received on 12th March 2013 regarding the
record of employment and qualifications of Karl Michael aka "Eia" Asen, under the Freedom
of Information Act (2000).
Your three requests received on 12th March 2013 are being aggregated as one request under
the terms of the Freedom of Information Act (2000), as they meet the requirements for
aggregation i.e. the requests are for the same or similar information.
You requested the following information:
According to his CV a Dr Karl Michael Asen, aka "Eia" Asen has been head of parenting
assessment services, at a Mother and Baby unit at Bethlem Royal Hospital from the years
1997 - 2002.
1. Can you please confirm that such a unit existed at Bethlem Royal Hospital during that
period and that Karl Michael aka "Eia" Asen was the head of the unit.
There is a Mother and Baby Unit at Bethlem Royal Hospital which has been open since 1981.
Dr Asen was responsible for the parenting assessment service of the unit from 1997 to 2002.
The head of the Mother and Baby Unit was Professor Channi Kumar.
2. Can you please confirm his specific tasks as head of the unit?
Dr Asen was the head of the parenting assessment service on the Unit. The Unit has 13 beds
- 2 beds are dedicated for parenting assessments.
3. It is also unclear how Dr Karl Michael aka "Eia" Asen can be head of a unit at Bethlem
Royal Hospital while he was still in training. Can you please explain this?
Dr Asen was a qualified psychiatrist when he worked as the head of the parenting
assessment service on the Unit.
4. Can you please confirm what training Dr Karl Michael Asen, aka "Eia" Asen has done at
Maudsley Hospital and if he obtained any formal mental health qualification as part of this
training?
5. Can you please confirm the academic titles of Dr Karl Michael aka "Eia" Asen and what
mental health training qualified him for this post?
6. What other departments, if any, did Karl Michael "Eia" Asen work for at the Bethlem Royal
Hospital?
7. According to his CV he obtained "training" as Psychotherapist and Family Therapist during
this period. His CV is unspecific about what his academic title in mental health would be after
such training and what the training entailed. Can you please clarify what he trained in?
8. Can you please clarify his overall formal qualifications in mental health?

regarding the qualifications and employment of Dr Karl Michael aka Eia Asen as he is no
longer employed by Trust. If you require information on his qualifications and registration
status or have concerns regarding Dr Asen, please refer to the General Medical Council’s
