101 call waiting times and abandoned calls to Surrey Police 2017/18

The request was successful.

Dear Surrey Police,

I have recently attempted to contact your organisation via the 101 number to report vehicles obstructing the pavement necessitating pedestrians to walk out into the road. On both attempts I gave up after waiting on hold for over 20 minutes (on one attempt this was 32 minutes).

1) How long have members of the public waited for 101 police calls to be answered in each month over the past 12 months (August 2017 to July 2018)? Could you please provide this information showing the average waiting time and the longest waiting time in each month.

2) How many calls by members of the public waiting for 101 police calls to be answered have been abandoned before they were answered, in each of the past 12 months?

Statistical date on the police.uk website does now show the above information as of 10/08/18.

Yours faithfully,

Jeremy Varns

Dear Surrey Police,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of Surrey Police's handling of my FOI request '101 call waiting times and abandoned calls to Surrey Police 2017/18'.

By law, under all circumstances, Surrey Police should have responded to my request, which is now long overdue. Disclosure of the requested information is also clearly in the public's interest given the importance of having a reliable mechanism to report and record crime.

A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is available on the Internet at this address: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/1...

Yours faithfully,

Jeremy Varns

Dear Mr Varns,

I write in connection with your request for information received on 10
August 2018.

I apologise for the late response to your request; the delay in processing
has been due to unprecedented levels of requests that had resulted in a
backlog – I hope that this has not caused you too much inconvenience.  You
had asked:

Q1)  How long have members of the public waited for 101 police calls to be
answered in each month over the past 12 months (August 2017 to July
2018)?  Could you please provide this information showing the average
waiting time and the longest waiting time in each month.

Q2)  How many calls by members of the public waiting for 101 police calls
to be answered have been abandoned before they were answered, in each of
the past 12 months?

Response:

Section 1 of the Freedom of information Act 2000 (FOIA) places two duties
on public authorities.  Unless exemptions apply, the first duty at
s1(1)(a) is to confirm or deny whether the information specified within a
request is held.  The second duty at s1(1)(b) is to disclose information
that has been confirmed as being held.  Where exemptions are relied upon
Section 17 of the FOIA requires that we provide the applicant with a
notice which: a) states that fact, b) specifies the exemption(s) in
question and c) state (if that would not otherwise be apparent) why the
exemption applies.

The information that you have requested is held by Surrey Police; our
response is contained in the attached spreadsheet.

Surrey Police provides you the right to request a re-examination of your
case under its review procedure. How to do this is set out in the attached
Appeals Notice.  Having followed the full procedure, if you are still
dissatisfied, then you have the right to direct your comments to the
Information Commissioner who will give your case consideration.

Thank you for your interest in Surrey Police. Should you have any further
enquiries concerning this matter, please write or contact us on 01483 -
630007 quoting the reference number above.

Yours sincerely
