TfL ref:  FOI-0792-1112

Thank you for your email received by Transport for London (TfL) on 15 September
2011 asking for information about bus accidents.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of
Information Act 2000 and TfL’s information access policy. I can confirm that TfL does
hold some of the information you require. You asked:

1.  The number of TfL bus accidents that required police attendance.

We do not hold details on whether the police attended incidents or not.  You may
wish to contact the Metropolitan Police for this information using the following link:
Metropolitan Police Service - Information Request

2. The number of TfL bus accidents that involved fatalities of members of the
public and the number of fatalities.

Please see the attached tables showing the number of incidents which involved
fatalities and the number of fatalities.

We have provided tables on fatalities and collisions on the bus network from 1 April
2007 to 16 September 2011, and the associated accidents rates for context. These
show a general decline in the number of incidents set against the kilometres
operated by the bus network.

The London bus network comprises more than 8,500 vehicles and operates 460
million kilometres a year across more than 700 bus routes.  In 2010/11, on the bus
network there were 0.021 fatalities per million kilometres which shows how safe bus
travel is. TfL encourages full reporting of all incidents, regardless of severity or
whether an incident may have been caused by a third party, such as another road
user.

3.  For 1 and 2 above, which of your subcontracted bus companies were
involved and how many accidents per subcontracted bus provider for the
period.

Please see the attached tables.  However, we do not regard statistics by operator as
a reasonable basis for comparison or a fair reflection of a bus operator’s
performance. Only accident investigations provide a comprehensive means of
understanding causes, taking into account the actions of other roads users and
considering these in relation to culpability. The bus Operating Companies have
vastly different numbers and portfolios of routes, some in central corridors through
inner London, others in the periphery of outer London, where the number of vehicles,
cyclists and pedestrians encountered can vary substantially.

4.  How much compensation was paid to members of the public for accidents
broken down by year and subcontracted bus company.

Claims for compensation are solely dealt with by the bus operators and affected third
parties. TfL does not hold this data.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for
some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet
for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
