Yearly ridership by line

Roedd y cais yn llwyddiannus.

Dear Transport for London,

I would like to know the yearly ridership (number of passenger journeys) broken down by London underground line.

I would also appreciate monthly and daily ridership for the whole network and by line if you have it.

Yours faithfully,

Freddie Poser

Dear Graham,

Thank you for your response. Having looked at the data it doesn't quite seem to match up with the totals you (and your annual report) list. For example if I add up the annual journeys for the LU lines I get a figure of 2.19 billion, nearly double than the official figure.

I was hoping you would be able to check this and help me understand the format of the data.

Best wishes,

Freddie Poser

FOI, Transport for London

Dear Freddie

The information provided to you was data using the combination of
Origin-Destination data at every station, and a process of route
assignment modelling which assigns all the flows at every route on the
network.

The assignment is based on Generalised Journey Time, where each O-D trip
is assigned to the line or lines that deliver the quickest overall
journey. We then aggregate the flows by station/line/link. So, each line
load includes all flows assigned in each line after the route assignment
modelling. Therefore, for example, if a passenger first boarded a Victoria
line and then changed to the Northern line to complete their journey, the
journey would be recorded for both lines.

We provided the information to you in this way as you have requested
information split by line, but this does mean that adding all the journeys
results in the double (or triple) counting and incorrectly high totals
which you have noticed.  It is not possible to accurately split journeys
by London Underground line without getting these inflated figures. The
figures provided in the annual report are therefore correct.

I hope this clarifies the situation.

Kind regards

Dear Graham,

Thank you very much, that does clarify things. Are these figures comparable to the figures in the 2012-13 performance data almanac: https://web.archive.org/web/201208030653...

Yours sincerely,
